The Dream-Walker War: Book 2

In the eighty years since the Great Awakening, humans and non-humans have lived side by side, relatively at peace.  In an attack that leaves his wife dead, Jordan MacNaught is caught up in the start of a war meant to turn the other races against the vampires. He knows beyond a doubt the vampires of yesteryear are not involved in the attacks. They're all dead, except for him.

Jordan asks for Chris Javert's help in hunting those who murdered his wife. She's no stranger to hunting vampires. After all, she nearly destroyed Jordan when she ended the reign of his Aristocrats in Europe two hundred years ago.

Despite doubts about Jordan’s innocence, Chris joins forces with him, the man who once tried to kill her, to save the inter-species pace from the new Aristocrats before war consumes them all.

Excerpt:

Despite the disturbing turn to her daydream, the shower centered her. It certainly ended her bout of the hornies. When she exited the frosted glass enclosure into the steam and gardenia-scented room, Chris could face the world, and Jordan, again. Cool marble tile provided a sharp contrast against the balmy miasma blanketing her. She needed to get dressed and back to work.

“It’s about time you got out,” Jordan said as he materialized, seated on the edge of the counter between the sink bowls. His legs dangled over the edge.

“Son of a—” Chris yelped and leaped for her towel.

He blinked slowly, warning, and she just caught herself before the last word slipped out. The last time she called him a son of a bitch, he buried her alive for disparaging his mother. For some reason, he objected to the pejorative, even though rumor had it he’d killed his mother at some point. She clutched at her towel like a shield.

“What are you doing in here?”

“To quote a certain someone, I should think that it’s fairly obvious. I wanted to talk to you.” He flashed a smile, fangs just barely showing, and leaned his weight back on his palms. “You know, Chrissy, if you’d just given me a bit longer, you wouldn’t have had to resort to alternative methods.”

She might be claustrophobic, but right then she wanted the floor to open up and swallow her whole. Dear God. Her reflection turned a nice, brilliant, beet red, and she looked around for her bathrobe, finally finding it slung over the door that separated the toilet from the main portion of the room. “Mother of Lorminstra, you perverted jackanapes!”

Jordan blinked again, the picture of innocence. “I am the perverted one? Which one of us just masturbated in the shower?”

This absolutely can’t be happening. Please let this be a continuation of the weird-ass dream. Chris snatched her robe down and yanked it on, surreptitiously pinching her side in the process. Pain flared and dissipated. Unfortunately, the bathroom invasion continued unabated. Damn, no dream. She belted the flimsy scrap of silk, not feeling much more secure than with the towel. “You could have waited five minutes.”

“I did. Then, when you still didn’t emerge, I thought I’d wait in here.”

Since the universe didn’t see fit to rescue her by sending a great bolt of lightning or a tsunami to kill her, she needed to brazen the situation out. And had her shower really taken that long? Good lord.

“What was so important you couldn’t wait? And while there’d better not be a next time, next time let me know you’re there. I could have finished...ah, I could have gotten, ah, ….”

There really wasn’t a good way to end that statement, and she floundered. He didn’t seem inclined to rescue her either, judging by his grin. Asshole. The recently departed headache began to squeeze her temples again.

“I wouldn’t have enjoyed it half as much if I had interrupted, unless I joined in.”

“Well, why didn’t you?” In her brief glimpse before she bent at the waist and flipped her hair over her head to begin toweling it dry, she got good visual confirmation that he definitely enjoyed the view. Must have been in mist form to see much, given the frosted glass that surrounded the shower.

“And get my clothes wet? Don’t be absurd.”

“A normal person would join me.” She wrung her hair out with more force than strictly necessary. “Now, explain what was so important you felt the need to become a Peeping Jordan, and then get out!”

“I think you need to have another go in the shower, if you’re still this waspish.”

Anthony would thank her if she killed him.

“I’ll make this brief. You’re fond of gambling, aren’t you?”

“What of it?” She continued to rub viciously with the towel, not sure she followed him yet. “I’m fond of lots of things.”

“Earlier, you propositioned me.”

Chris choked. “I did no such thing!”

“Then what would you call it?”

“Losing my mind.”

Jordan chuckled. From her upside down position, she saw his legs stop swinging as he leaned forward. “I propose a bet. Just to make our time a little more interesting, although I doubt it will beat what I just saw.”

She purposely ignored the latter half of his statement. Finished with her scalp she moved on to the longer portion of her hair.

“If you win, I will walk the straight and narrow for, hmmm. Two decades should be impetus enough, even for you. While not admitting to having done anything that might get me in trouble under your country’s Rights and Responsibilities Act, I promise not to indulge in any of my more exotic entertainments for that period. No murder, no torture, nothing of that nature.” Her eyes widened, and she stood, towel held loosely in her right hand. “I thought that might garner your exclusive attention.”

Mouth dry, she swallowed hard. For that offer, he wanted something big in return. “And if I lose?”

“I get your blood. More specifically, we forge a blood-bond.”

No chance in hell.

Though she wanted to say the words, she didn’t. If she rejected him out of hand without a good reason, he might wonder. Vampires commonly shared blood. It wasn’t safe for her to do, since most people would feel obligated to turn her over to the Circle for execution if they figured out what she was.

She couldn’t dismiss the possibility he’d offered the bet to see how desperate she was to avoid sharing blood. In that case, she should say yes and win, no matter the cost.

“Quite the stakes. What’s the bet?”

  1. Romance Book Junkies Review

Posted by Ava on 19th Sep 2012

Definitely not the way I thought Tory would go with the second book of series, but still an enjoyable and great read that was surprising, exciting, sensual and adventurous. New characters were introduced and old ones revisited. I found this addition to the series to be a great one with even more fun than the last. It also brought about more clarity of what happened in the last book of the series. I definitely feel it can be read as a stand-alone because Tory wrote it with the past intertwined which made for a complete and satisfying read. Any paranormal lover whether vampire, shape shifters or witch enthusiasts will have great fun reading Blood Mage Rising :)

Chris is a true delight! She’s kick butt, full of spunk, practically fearless, and has many secrets (even another side to her person). Some secrets are known to less than a handful. Others are known to no one she associates with on a daily basis. That’s no one but Jordan, the master of death and destruction himself, in the flesh! Wa ha ha ha…

Jordan is looking to clear his name and get revenge for the murder of his wife. He has become a suspect to all of the murders that have been happening and needs to clear his name and the one he goes to for help is Chris. Now he needs to convince her he is not guilty and wants justice served so she will agree to assist him. There’s also a little tid bit of his attraction to her that he would like resolved. But Chris is not an easy woman and it will take a lot of convincing on his part to get her where he wants her.

Together they are solving the who’s who of multiple murders of both paranormals and humans alike by a group that calls themselves the aristocrats. Secrets long kept by both are revealed, appreciated and accepted. I look forward to the next in the series and what unfolds. Especially after the way the book ended!!

4 hearts overall, and 4 lightning bolts for sex.

  2. Coffee Time Romance Reviews

Bloody Baron Jordan MacNaught has ruled the Aristocrats in England during his reign of terror, ended after two centuries by Christine ‘Chris’ Javert. Apparently living a demure lifestyle since then, an attack that leaves his wife dead pulls him into the start of war meant to turn all the other races against the Blood (vampires).

Chris Javert is asked by the Circle to investigate who the new Aristocrats are. Even though there is a lot of bad blood between them, Jordan approaches her with a proposal she cannot refuse–help him hunt those who killed his wife.

Throughout the hunt, Chris is wary of Jordan, who once buried her alive. Jordan, instead, has his own ulterior motives. Bodies are piling up quickly all over the world and time is running out while the hunt takes a turn for the bizarre. So they face something neither has ever encountered before, struggling also against an attraction towards each other neither can deny. Will they be able to overcome the odds and find the new Aristocrats before time runs out and all-out war breaks?

Why oh why do I have to wait for the next book in the series? This is one unconventional paranormal romance. Jordan is nowhere near the hero readers will expect. Unlike most, he has no regrets over his past. He is manipulative, arrogant and never leaves an opportunity to relive the old days. The chemistry between him and Chris is simmering and the romance is more like a bad guy corrupting the ‘trying’ to be a nice girl. Chris is also an unconventional heroine who can be brutal when required. But if she is no softie, she is very loyal to her friends. Do not expect any expressions of love from them, though I think they will eventually come into it. For now do not expect a HEA. Instead, readers can expect action, torture, manipulation and fight against time to keep them on the edge of their seats with adventure and sizzling scenes. OooOooo…I love it! The fifth cup is for the cliffhanger in the end I could not anticipate, which will have me sweating and guessing till the next book comes out, in the hope the author finally answers all the mysteries she leaves unsolved in this.

  3. The TBR Pile Reviews

Hate is a funny thing, it’s a strong emotion that if cut in half would find a far different emotion but when all you’ve know is hate how do you put it aside. Chris Javert knows hate all too well and much of it directed Jordan MacNaught but her despised enemy needs her help in discovering who murdered his wife. If she doesn’t help him she puts her goals of peace at risk but if she helps him then she faces a much larger risk, one that she may never recover from.

I read the first book and absolutely loved it. When offered this one, I didn’t even hesitate to say yes. I enjoyed it, not as much as I did the first but those characters are going to be hard to beat. Still the author stuck with what made the first one great and it carried over to this book as well. We still have the amazing amount of details that the author loves to pack into a book and you freely flow through the written word. I completely forgot about the world and troubles as I got completely lost in this book. While this doesn’t have the same plot as the other book there is still that Old Worldly feel that I truly enjoyed about the first and we are once more incased in an intense suspense that keeps us interested.

However, if you asked me what really pulled everything together it was the intense emotions of the characters. They are contrasting dynamics, dynamite and gun powder, the explosion between the two is a complete blast to watch. Yet I missed the balls to the wall heroine that we had from the first book. Don’t get me wrong, I like Chris but I found her a bit too vulnerable and whiney at times which I kind of feel too many authors are writing now a days. Give me a empowered woman any day of the week over a whiner.

Everything combined together made for a really enjoyable read and I still highly recommend this author and series. This is good stuff that any vampire paranormal lover is sure to enjoy.

  4. Boook Up Reviews

To say that Chris has a complicated relationship with Jordan would be a huge understatement. He buried her and she almost killed him for that. Still, they couldn’t go more than ten years without tangling the sheets.
Yeah, she found her addiction to the sociopath fantastic. One of these days, he’d snap and try to bury her again.
Jordan offers her a deal that could guaranty the safeness of Chris’ friend; he will bind in a binding curse in exchange of her help in finding the ones who recently killed his wife. All they knew was that it was the Aristocrats who did it. And that they was killing humans and non-humans all over the world.
If a condition of the curse is breached, body boils and eyes leaking blood will be the least of the breaching party’s problems.
“I’m willing to bind myself in such a curse with you. If you help me track down the ones who killed my wife, I will never go near Athdara again. She will be safe from me and my agents.”
Still, hours after their bind, Chris is attacked and she almost dies; Jordan saves her because her death will mean his death, since they are bonded together as the two of them are blood-mage (vamps and mages). Also, Jordan promises Chris he will teach her to use her magic, although he used to hunt mage-born for the Circle.

They soon discover that someone by the name of Ares, a dream-walker, is the one who leads the Aristocrats, but they don’t know that he is closer than they think to his ultimate task.

This is the second book of The Dream-Walker War’s series and I have to say I liked the first one more. The main characters disappointed me. I like my heroes to be redeemed. Not to read about a killing machine who never feel remorse or pity but loves the smell of the fear, and enjoys the torture from time to time. As for Chris, I felt like she's half done… that there was a part of her that's missing.

Although I liked the storyline, I can only rate it 3.5 stars.

  5. Sizzling Hot Book Reviews

Posted by Unknown on 26th Apr 2012

Every ten years or so Chris Javert and Jordan MacNaught come together for a night of passion. They must do it to satisfy their need for lust because they are tangled and entwined in each other. But that doesn’t mean that they necessarily like each other.
Chris once tried to kill Jordan by leaving him attached to the wall in a burning house. While Jordan had Chris buried alive when she called Jordan’s mom a not complimentary name. Yet when they are forced to work together to help the vampire ruling council solve hideous crimes, their passion leads to a friendship and possibly something more. Humans who are able to do magic should never be turned into a vampire because of their new-found abilities. In fact a law was made to kill them on sight. However, both Jordan and Chris are hiding secrets that will draw them together and make them perfect for each other.

Blood-Mage Rising was a page-turner as I tried to figure out who was behind the crimes and whether or not Chris and Jordan would work together or not. Each of them were beautifully flawed. They were not the typical “good guys” yet they found themselves doing horrible things in the name of revenge or protecting others. I loved seeing these two find their way. When they weren’t fighting with each other, they were fighting the passion that they had for the other person. Chris didn’t like giving up control and Jordan relished bring out the fire in her.

Blood-Mage Rising is the second book in The Dream-Walker War series and pulls together some of the previous books characters in a new storyline. Jordan was the villian in the previous book and Chris was only a friend of the main character. I loved that they finally got their own story and enjoyed their murky integrity more than the upstanding characters of the first book. The war is getting more dangerous and noone can be trusted. I’m really looking forward to more in this series as each book is better than the last!
