Product Description

When Brea Tackett is gunned down in cold blood her guardian angel is unable to leave her to face an eternity in hell. Nox knows Angels aren’t supposed to fall in love, but that rule was broken with Brea long ago. So he strikes a deal with Azrael, the Angel of Death, for the future of her soul.

Becoming a Reaper allows Brea a chance at redemption. Purgatory is a world unlike any she’s ever dreamed of—filled with Angels, Demons, and temptation. But with training and the desire to succeed, she’s walking the straight and narrow, with one exception—Nox.

She stepped down from the shower and wrapped her body in a white towel.

Her jaw dropped.

Ten feet away, Nox waited, casually propped against the wall.

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“You said we weren’t finished with our conversation.” He shrugged.

“That didn’t mean I wanted you to stalk me,” she murmured, mindful of Garrick in the other room. “How did you find me?” she asked, suddenly numb. She’d always known Nox teetered on the edge of good and evil. Maybe this was where he crossed that line.

“I always know where you are,” he whispered huskily as he approached. His relentless steps caused her to retreat until her body met counter and she was forced to grasp the marble for support as he pressed his length along hers.

“Besides, you’re hidden from evil, not morally ambiguous,” he said. His reply answered the silent question that had formed in her head.

“There’s the how, but not the why.”

“I already told you. A week ago you wouldn’t have asked me for a reason,” he said. His rich baritone was full of regret as he pinned her with his dark gaze.

“Nox…” Frozen by the unexpected display of emotion that swam on the surface, she was unable to respond with a witty comeback. A shudder rippled through her body at the vision he made in the faded blue shirt that caressed his broad shoulders and the pants that highlighted his taut ass and long, lean legs.

“We have a lot of unfinished things between us, you and me,” he breathed into her ear.

She bit back a moan as the heated air teased her senses. After all this time, he knew what she liked. Warm hands gripped her hips, and she felt her body turn to putty when he lifted her to sit on the counter. The coolness of the stone met her heated flesh and coaxed a whimper from her parted lips. Her nipples pebbled in response and her pussy began to throb with want.

“W-What are you doing,” she managed as he lowered himself to his knees. A thrill of panic and delight spiraled though her body at the sight of her lover prepared to pleasure.

“You smell like flowers, musk, and honey. Such a delicious combination, it’d be a crime to let all that cream go to waste.”

Her cry echoed off the walls when he tugged the towel from around her body and barred her with his hungry gaze

“Do you know I can smell how much you want me?”

Her body quivered.

“Mmm, you have such a pretty pussy, baby.”

A growl rumbled in his chest as he spread her legs apart and took in the smooth glistening mound wet with her desire.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

He ran a teasing finger over her swollen nub and her hips jerked. No matter how many times they shared this intimacy, his admiration always made her feel like it was their first. He’d been timid and somewhat awkward when their relationship first entered physical territory. But what he lacked in skill he more than made up for in sincerity. No one else had ever looked at her with the worship visible in his gaze. It almost made up for the constant sexual frustration experienced when they stopped short of consummation.

“Anxious, aren’t you? Normally I’d draw this out, but seeing as how we’re short on time…”

He buried his fingers into her moist cavern and elicited a gasp. Her fingers gripped the counter for dear life, and she bit down on her bottom lip hard enough to break the skin. She wanted to ask for more, but fought to hold onto control. It was all a part of the game they played.

  1. Sizzling Hot Book Reviews

Posted by Unknown on 17th Apr 2012

Brea Tackett chose to escape from the rotten neighborhood that she grew up in by marrying a guy that she thought was her knight in shining armor, Ryan. At least he gave her protection, beautiful clothes, and food. She lived like a queen even if she had to compromise her values to help him. But when she began to question what was happening as well as her part in it, Brea became a liability that Ryan couldn’t afford so he fixed the problem with a 9mm.

However, Brea was never alone. Watching over her was Nox, (short for Lenox) her guardian angel. Upon seeing her early, violent death and knowing that she is marked for Hell not Heaven, Nox makes a deal with Azrael, the angelic leader of the reapers. Az offers Brea a chance to redeem herself by serving time in Purgatory as a reaper or collector of souls. In Purgatory, Anna serves as Brea’s mentor and the two women become best friends. But even the demons have their eyes on Brea and Nox will do anything to keep her safe.

A physical relationship begins with Nox and Brea, tempting the boundaries of passion and of angelic law which could sway the balance in the war between Heaven and Hell. Nox isn’t completely honest with Brea in the beginning and with her own issues with men, she doesn’t trust him. So when Az gives Brea a special assignment along with a physical body, she jumps at the chance to put some distance between her and Nox. Brea must heal, protect and deliver Garrick Larkin to Angel Fire, New Mexico. Thinking distance will help her thoughts clear and passions cool, Brea is happy to escape Nox…but then Az forces her and Nox both on guard detail to protect Garrick. The two are face to face as they fight demons and Lucifer on the trip to New Mexico in an all out battle for their own souls as well.

I really loved the imagery in Don’t Fear the Reaper. Shyla Colt takes the story of good vs. evil in a new direction. The secondary characters of Anna, Rhea’s mentor and the evil Boden (demon) were entertaining and I wanted to learn more about them and how they came to be in this story even though the story was about Nox and Brea.

The main characters in Don’t Fear the Reaper seem to be two-dimensional. Brea is a woman with low self-esteem. She hears this inner voice that is constantly putting her down and giving her reasons to give up. She has a better understanding of Anna’s problems than her own. Nox is very determined but because of choices he made, he is fallen although his fall wasn’t as bad as the other fallen angels. He never took up arms against his fellow angels, just refused to fight when he saw the many deaths on each side. I understand that there are different depths of crime; stealing vs. murder but I think that Nox is not really fallen because if he was really an evil angel, he would be unlovable to Brea.

Don’t Fear the Reaper moves very quickly and at times you can become lost about what is going on because the characters can manipulate time and places. One moment the characters are in a roaring 20’s nightclub and next they are in a dark alley. If you are looking for a quick, fun read with a lot of action, I recommend Don’t Fear the Reaper. It is a perfect summer read and will restore your hopes for mankind.

  3. Rocking Title and Rocking Book!

Posted by Nichelle on 17th Aug 2011

What a thrilling ride Shyla Colt leads the reader on in DON'T FEAR THE REAPER. I have to say I loved the roller coaster ride and wanted more even after the book ended. Filled with action from beginning to the end and ending with a bang.

I loved this take on Angels and Demons. The world of angels, demons and humans interacting with one another is vivid and very realistic. The conflict between the hero and heroine is well plotted out and I found myself wanting to get to know them. To learn why they were drawn together. This book is dark, fun, witty, sweet and erotic all rolled up into sixty-eight exciting pages. The culmination of the hero and heroine fulfilling their destiny with one another left me pleasantly satisfied and wanting more.

What can I say about Brea, beautiful and feisty Brea. Brea is so very tough but at the same time there is a sweetness about her that as a reader you cannot resist and you want her to be able to get everything that she wants in life. You root for her to be able to gain her second chance and to win Nox. Vulnerability. One thing I noted about this character was even with her tough exterior that she was so very vulnerable and naive in some instances. But it fit with the whole theme. She was dealing with angels and demons. Being human and not knowing what the overall plan (not privy to what 'He' willed) is helped to show her vulnerability.

Oh my and Nox? God. Shyla Colt, I blame you for my lust over an angel. He was my favorite type of hero. Sexy, hot, brooding and dark. But on a serious mission to save the woman he loved. He is the ultimate protector. A guardian who fell in love with his charge.

I loved the back and forth dialogue between all the characters in the book. Most especially the dialogue between Nox and Brea. It was just right and flowed well. Seeing as Nox and Brea's relationship was well established (he had been her guardian since her birth), their romantic involvement was realistic. I could see Nox actually watching her through her life and falling in love with her once she became of age, and then having to temper that need to do his duty of protecting her, even if it is from himself.

My overall impression is if you're looking for dark erotica, this is the place to start.

Five stars for a very interesting plot, sexy characters and one hell of a rocking title.

  4. Review at THE TBR PILE

    Posted by thetbrpile.weebly.com on 11th Aug 2011

Despite Brea being a reaper, Nox, who saved her is already in a relationship with her. It was jarring, the flashbacks that actually told the story of how they met and fell for each other. That plan did not work out, as I believe it was intended. It tends to sweep the reader right from the page and into another previous story. It’s not an effortless flow I’ll tell you that. If she had played the story out as a timeline (Death, reaper, meet, fall for each other) I think it would have flowed perfectly.

You see, she has talent. Not once did I feel unconnected to the characters. They were always well written and the scenery painted nicely with words. It was however a little rushed. This is a novella but clearly should have been an engrossing novel. By the way, Nox sounds freaking scrumptious! The sex was well written but not super intense. The plot was unique and very interesting.

Ms. Colt draws the reader into a world of Angels and reapers. Good vs evil with some sex on this side. This is a recommended read for sure!
