Harry Blackwood has a rule never to sleep with a woman younger than thirty. But he’s also never been to a ball uninvited, stripped naked over tea in a quiet parlor, stepped inside a male bordello, been spanked by anyone other than his father, or become emotionally involved in another person’s life. And within a few hours, all that will change.
Christina Deveraux is nineteen, untamable as a hellcat and determined to enjoy Harry Blackwood’s abundant favors the moment he drops his trousers in her front parlor. As for his silly rules— she’s never met a rule she couldn’t break. After all, it is only sex, it’s her trade now she’s been left to manage her mother’s house of sin, and she has enough theory advice from a set of explicit diaries.
Now she wants to put text into practice. And Harry just happens to be the perfect study mate.

“If you’re interested in staying here, you’d better let me see what you have to offer,” she added, picking up her teacup, arching her little finger and sipping delicately. “I never take on a new boarder without a thorough inspection. One can’t be too careful.”
Was the little brat toying with him now? He could have sworn her black gown was buttoned up right to her throat before, yet somehow there was more flesh visible suddenly. She sat forward on the edge of her chair, and her dark shape was exaggerated against the paler colors of the upholstery. Her waist was narrow, her bosom a promising swell above the strict lines of her corset, although not disproportionate with the rest of her. Her long, slender hands were always busy, even when the rest of her was rigidly still. Now they held her teacup, rubbing the china, tapping it lightly. She looked down at her tea, but he caught the sparks of amusement under her pale gold lashes, the smug twist of her lips.
He sat back in the chair. “At your age, you don’t even know what you’re looking for in a man.”
Her eyelashes swung up; her eyes sparked. “I know what appeals to my clientele, and that’s what’s important.”
Young chit. How could she know? He supposed it was possible, even at her age, but the reasons why and how she came to have that knowledge only angered him, so he bit it back down and smothered it.
“Well,” she said, balancing her teacup and saucer in her lap. “Are you going to drop your drawers or have you lost your gumption?”
It would serve her right, he mused, if he did strip off and show her. That would give her a shock. Or perhaps not. Her expression was world weary now and he couldn’t tell if it was exaggerated merely for his benefit.
“I thought you said I was too old,” he replied finally, hands gripping the arms of the chair.
She gave a half shrug. “I suppose some of my clients might like an older man.” Her tongue darted out, sweeping across her lower lip. “There are some with peculiar preferences. I don’t judge. Let me see what you have to offer, and I’ll decide if you fit our high standard.”
He’d been in this world a hell of a lot longer than she, and he knew this girl thought she was teasing him. But he was drawn in, fascinated by her lusciously curved and blooming rose-pink lips.
He pictured them making a damp trail down his chest, over his taut belly, and down to his—
Don’t think about that.
Too late. Damn.
“What sort of peculiar preferences?” he growled.
She smiled coolly. “I don’t gossip.” Leaning forward, she set her tea cup on the tray. Her eyes were shrewd and quick, her smile carefully measured, but apparently he’d annoyed her. He saw the anger trying to hide behind the forget-me-not blue of her wide eyes.
He scratched his rough stubble and observed her for a moment. Miss Christina Deveraux was more trouble than he needed. He shouldn’t be admiring her figure, her lips, or her elegant hands. He should be on his way to the train station, putting her out of his mind.
“Well, Mr. Blackwood. What are you waiting for?”
Evidently, she thought she could handle him. How long had she been in this business? And why hadn’t anyone taken her out of it by now? She ought to be rescued, whether she thought she needed it or not.
“You won’t get carried away and try to touch me or anything?”
Her right eyebrow lifted. “I’m sure I’ll control myself. Old man.”
“I hope so. Most women can’t in my presence.” He treated her to a grin that didn’t earn him any more than a slight sigh of impatience.
Fine. She’d asked for it.
Standing swiftly, he began to remove his waistcoat and then his shirt, dropping each to the chair he’d vacated. “How many men have disrobed for you in this room?”
“Too many to count.” She sat very straight, hands in her lap, eyes on his chest.
“And you don’t hire them all?”
“I’m very selective.”
He waited, hands on his hips.
“Trousers too,” she instructed softly. “I must see the tools of your trade, if you mean to work for me.”
He glowered at her, but she didn’t flinch. Cool as a cucumber.
“Show me, Mr. Blackwood.”
“I’d rather not,” he muttered, thinking he’d gone far enough. Any further would be dangerous for them both.
“Why? Something to hide?”
He knew he wasn’t hiding anything at all. His erection was visible through his breeches, and she had her eyes on it, boldly assessing the rigid outline. Harry had never undressed for a woman before. It was usually the other way around, but then there was a great deal about this encounter that was different. And even though his mind doubted, his body seemed to like her bossy commands.
“This is no time for timidity, Mr. Blackwood,” she added, lashes fluttering as her gaze lifted slowly upward. “Trousers down.” There was an edge to her voice now, as if she was accustomed to giving orders and being obeyed.
“What if your housekeeper comes in?”
“I can assure you, she’s seen it all before.”
“Not mine she hasn’t.”
“Oh, is there something peculiar about it then? Something extraordinary? Mr. Blackwood, the anticipation is killing me.”
The woman was asking for trouble.

This is a story of opposites coming together to become something better than either was before on their own. What could be more romantic than that? I liked Harry and enjoyed being in his point-of-view. He comes across as sexy and smart with an edge of chivalry and protectiveness, at times touchingly bemused. He’s paired with the strong-minded, stubborn Christina. Harry is the son of a quirky man whose will requires Harry to return the paintings in the family private collection to the models who posed for them. If they don’t do this then the money will go to the housekeeper.
Though her mother was a courtesan who later ran a male bordello, Christina had been sheltered and educated to be a governess. When her mother dies, Christina finds herself in the position of needing to run the male bordello. She reads her mother’s diaries, quickly loses her naivety and sets about determinedly to run the male brothel on her own. However, one small catch keeps tripping her up. She needs sexual experience to know how to do well in this business.
That’s when Harry comes into the picture. There’s sexual tension aplenty between these two from the very start. Their sexual attraction pulls them together even as misgivings and their flaws pull them apart. Christina needs to learn to accept help from another person and Harry needs to learn how to be accessible and to give help. The sex has a teasing and playful aspect to it while being hot and sexily written.
Overall, it’s a pleasingly tense plot in which two seemingly different people find they have much to learn from the other.
If you like strong-minded heroines, cool-on-the-outside-yet-sweet-on-the-inside heroes and erotic romance with good character growth then I highly recommend this spicy tale. It should warm up a few autumn evenings.

We are introduced to Christina, a name I’m not found of, but her character instantly stands out. She a virgin who inherited her mother’s bordello. Now doesn’t that sound like a fun read? Hell yes. Then she saves Harry who has the painting of her naked mother from a loud mouth woman trying to set him up with her sister. It’s a wonderfully written, witty scene. This of course, leds to a wicked adventure sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Let me tell you, that first sex scene was so intense and romantic I’m surprised the computer didn’t start smoking! She has a way of writing an erotic scene with such elegance. It’s a wonderful treat.
The story itself was a tad choppy. She jumped from Christina to Harry’s pov very quickly instead of a subtle switch. That wouldn’t hurt the rating as the story overpowered. The only reason it’s not getting a gleaming 5 stars is the ending. I won’t ruin it for you, but let’s just say Christina gives up something important for Harry. Something that she swore to never give up because it was her mothers. That pissed me off. She gave ‘it’ up just because he wanted her to move with him. I don’t think so.
Despite that, this is still a fantastic book and I highly recommend this romantic tale to any historical book lover!

Christina just may be facing the impossible challenge. Death of her mother: hard. A woman inheriting/running a business in the 1880’s: very difficult. The business being a male bordello: unheard of. But a young virgin running it: impossible. Thus, Christina has the problem of her virginity to solve and Harry just happens into her place at the right time to meet this need. But soon enough, both are Enraptured in the other beyond solving her ‘simple problem.’

The infamous Randolph Blackwood is dead. Never accept by the gentry, no matter how rich, because he was “new” money with no title, he eventually embraced his outcaste status and became a known eccentric. The special clause in his will comes as a surprise to his sons. If they want their share of his vast wealth, they must return the paintings in his private collection to the models. Three original paintings done by Randolph- one painting returned per son. If they fail to do so, all their inheritance goes to the housekeeper…and her cat, not that she owns a cat…yet.
Christina Deveraux has always been too headstrong and curious for her own good (or times and gender). Her mother wanted more for Christina than she ever had, and made sure Christina was well educated and had better opportunities. But after a couple years as a governess, her life completely changes with the unexpected death of her mother. Always sheltered from her mother’s life growing up, Christina learns that not only was Louisa Deveraux a once famed courtesan, but since retiring from that, she has been running a male bordello most of Christina’s life! With the help of her mother’s diaries and her assistant (who was also Christina’s nanny), Christina is determined to run this business as well as her mother did, and has managed to do so for three months. Her only problem is her virginity, and lack of actually knowledge of sex, is starting to hamper her. She just hadn’t found anyone who appealed to her enough to take care to that little problem until she met Harry.
Harry Blackwood has always been a no attachment kind of guy. That is why he has the rule about only older women; they understand life’s disappointment and don’t expect or want more than he is willing to give. But Christina quickly throws his world in chaos. He almost missed meeting her after learning of her mother’s death and thinking he couldn’t return the painting. Yet keeps being thankful to whatever fate stepped in and pushed them together. She is like a fresh sea breeze in his old settled world. Still, he keeps trying to stay emotionally detached. But she keeps pushing him away, not wanting to live according to any of society’s expectations. And this drives him to want to protect her. But she is too young and…etc, more back and forth on wanting her and running from her.
Two more confused, conflicted people don’t exist. Attraction pulls them together. Different wants and opinions push them apart. Can they possibly overcome their fixed ideas about society, marriage and opinions on everything else to find a happy future together?
The beginning of Enraptured had me questioning the premise of the book for a moment. A virginal governess running a male bordello in 1888? Really? Yet, even the opening shows why I enjoy reading Jayne Fresina’s Private Collection series so much. This quote proves my point: “Christina refused to run screaming from the room, covering her eyes & calling for smelling salts as any proper young lady should…Instead she was tempted to laugh. A naked man really was quit a comical sight to behold.” What person hadn’t thought this about someone they did not want to sleep with at some point in life? There is beauty in the human form, but there is also much to laugh at in what we humans do in life as well. Especially for a young virgin thrust into a whole new “world.” This was a great way to start and set the tone not only for the book but Christina’s character as well.
At first, Enraptured appears to be a story of opposites attracting. Old Harry and too young Christina. The virgin and the Casanova. World-weary verves curios excitement at everything new. Yet it turns out Harry and Christina have too many things in common to be opposites. Both were abandoned by a parent when young and greatly affect by this. And their remaining parent, while loving them, was too busy in business to give them as much time as they needed. Both claim to not want marriage or emotional attachment, but their actions show otherwise. Harry by his anthropomorphism of the painting; not just thinking of it as ‘she’ and giving it possible feelings, but even worrying about it/she getting cold! Christina shows great attachment to her old nanny, wants to get to know her newly found brother, and proves not to be cold-hearted like her mother in not taking everyone for as much money as she can get. Also, it seems their wanting to stay detached is a form of protecting their hearts and not hurting others. These two are great together: fierce attraction, fighting emotional involvement, denial of feelings, strong personalities “fighting” each other. While Harry seems a cold fish at first, he quickly shows his softer side in constantly coming to Christina’s aid and worrying about her. And Christina shows (and learns) that there is such a thing as being too independent. But some lessons have to be learned to hard way…
I am sorry (and sad) to see A Private Collection series end. Jayne Fresina manages to put a new or unique spin on old concepts like: age has no bearing on love, sometimes we hide what we need to express the most, surface appearances are not all there is to people, love is worth waiting for. I love her ways of twisting a historical theme into wonderfully entertaining stories and can’t wait for more from Jayne.
Enraptured is a wonderful example of how well Jayne Fresina can twist the idea of “historical romance.” This erotic tale breaks every rule of old fashioned romances, but what a way to do it! Christina refuses to be “rescued,” not matter how old fashioned Harry’s ideas about a young lady in her position are. Harry tries to fight it, but in the end can’t resist Christina’s offer to share her bed, even when it breaks his own rules. As volatile as they are together, they still stir up emotion in the other and it’s not surprising that these two fall for each other. But their ending (and just before it) was a little different and pleasantly surprising. Enraptured is classic Jayne and a great ending to the Private Collection series.

Christina Deveraux has taken over her deceased mother’s male bordello. At nineteen and still a virgin, she has had to learn quite quickly how to mask her emotions in order to survive.
Harry Blackwood is known for his sexual promiscuity. He has no plans to marry and no plans to fall in love. Then he spots HER…
When Christina first sees Harry being harassed by an overzealous woman of the ton, she decides to rescue the poor man. There is something about the older gentleman that calls to her. Harry cannot believe his good fortune when Christina comes to his rescue, until he realizes she is eighteen years younger than he is. But when it comes to finally discovering what true passion is, Christina is not going to let a little complication like age stop her from satiating her urges.
What a hot number Enraptured is! You have a woman who is nineteen and bold as can be as she takes on a business that has made world-weary women blush. Then you have this man who is well-known for how much bed hopping he has done running as fast as he can to get away from a stubborn young woman. It is a twist in a tale of two people who recognize their passion for each other as one fights the desire while the other tries to satisfy it. Ms. Fresina has written a tale that has me aching to go back and read the other books in the series. My only wish is that there could have been some closure for Harry’s past.
