Excerpt

“Come in please,” he said and pulled her into the room.

It was as beautiful as Eva remembered and her eyes went straight to the flowers she had arranged on the bedside cabinet only yesterday. They were roses, white and red to match the room. The lights must have been turned on by someone and they gave the room almost a seductive air. Eva’s gaze fixed on the huge bed, draped in red silk... waiting.

He turned to face her, one hand continued to hold hers whilst the other shot out to shut the door. It closed with soft thud, leaving them completely alone. She waited for him to say something but he didn’t, he just continued to assess her with his eyes.

Eva bit down on her lip and tried to take steady, calming breaths. She had never felt so nervous in her entire life. The adrenaline was pumping through her body and once again her nipples were tingling.

The air around them was pulsing with what Eva suspected was desire, and it was impossible to think properly around it.

You’re probably imagining it. He probably just wants a drink made, a bath run or something. But those thoughts fled as soon as Eva realized his thumb was making little strokes up and down the side of her hand.

He lifted his other hand and fingered the curl which had escaped.

“Your hair is beautiful,” he said. “A beautiful color, the light makes it shine in the most amazing ways, like chocolate. It was the first thing I noticed when I came through the front doors. I saw it and had the most overwhelming desire to touch it. Release it for me please Eva, let me see it as it should be.”

“What?” Eva said for want of any other response, was he freaking serious?

He sighed and reached round for her braid. In one swift motion he pulled out the band holding it and freed her hair. As she knew it would if fell in a shock of riotous curls. He smiled and pulled the curls into his hands.

Eva squeaked.

“Beautiful,” he said. “As I knew it would be, as you are.” He shook his head slightly, seemingly bemused. “I didn’t expect this.”

“Expect what?” Eva asked, her words little more than a whisper. Dear God this can’t be happening.

“You.”

His hands moved from the curls and stoked slowly along the sides of her face. Her skin tingled in the wake of his touch.

“An unexpected development but a welcome one,” he continued. “I wonder what it means?”

“I... erm... I...” She didn’t know what to say. She couldn’t believe this was happening, Is this gorgeous, correction, the most gorgeous man I have ever seen seriously coming on to me? It seemed he was and Eva didn’t know what the hell to say, or do.

“Now, Eva,” he said playfully, pulling her out of her frenzied thoughts. “What I have to wonder is whether the woman beneath the curls is just as wild.”

Eva squeaked again. She had no experience of this, never before had she been the object of such practiced seduction. She didn’t know how to respond.

“Well, Eva?” he asked. “I have to say I suspect she is. No one can have such a devastating smile and not be.”

She bit down hard on her lip but nothing happened, she was not dreaming, this was real. What the hell was she supposed to do?

He sighed again and decided for her. Before she had time to even consider his words he pulled her to him and then his mouth was on hers and there wasn’t time to even protest.

His lips were cold, maybe from being outside but they moved over her with a sensuality that she could not help but respond to. His kissed Eva with a thoroughness she had never experienced, almost like he was trying to consume her. His lips coaxed hers, his tongue made patterns over her lips, plunged into her mouth until she could do nothing but kiss him back.

  1. You Gotta Read Reviews

Posted by Donna on 26th Feb 2012

I loved this story! What a fantastic, magical tale of two hearts destined to become one. Ms. Shortt has proven once again that she has a wonderful imagination and can express it in vivid details and descriptions. The love scenes were very arousing, the plot was quite unique, the characters were easy to relate to and fall in love with.

My only complaint (and the reason I couldn’t give this book a 5 star rating) was the number of typos and grammatical errors throughout the book. Some of the errors made me have to stop reading and do a double take to make sure I wasn’t missing something or reading a passage wrong, and that interrupted the magic of the story. Other than this one fault, Adam and Eva made me want to go visit a museum, gaze at the beautiful statues and wonder ‘what if’…

  2. Coffee Time Romance

Eva Diakou is an unemployed artist, and her savings are running out fast. She needs money! With no family or friends to think of, she takes a job on the Winterwood Estate. The job promises a large sum of money in exchange for four months of hard work.

Adam Winterwood has lived a long time. He is trapped, paying for a crime he did not commit. Although his punishment was extreme, he finally understands its meaning and knows how to end it.

When Eva gets to the estate, she is confused by the accommodations she is given and lack of work. Out of boredom, she walks the grounds and sketches the statues around the property. When the guests finally arrive, she meets Adam. The pull she feels towards him is almost overpowering, and she quickly develops feelings for him. She knows something is not right, but she cannot figure out what it is.

The Kiss had my attention from the very first page and kept me wondering and thinking until I reached the end. I really enjoyed the way we learn about Adam and Eva separately until they meet. When they meet, watch out! The scenes with them together are a perfect combination of romance and spice. Eva was instantly likable as an average looking, smart girl who asked questions instead of going with the flow. Adam was the perfect tortured hero with a secret. The whole book is well written, and I really enjoyed the ending. I am looking forward to reading more from Ms. Shortt.

  3. Dark Diva's Reviews

    Claudette’s Review:

Starving artist Eva, finds that the job offer that had to have a catch, was too good to be true. Grace her prospective manager was offering her a very highly paid job doing a little light cleaning on a large estate for four months.

An unsuspecting Eva has no idea exactly what is in store for her.
For two hundred years like a fairy tale prince, Adam Winterton has been cursed and is waiting impatiently for the end of his torment. Over the course of the story the reader can see how Adam changes from a spoiled and selfish young man and becomes in turn the man who Eva comes to love. It is clearly Eva’s innate decency and strength of character which make Adam fall for her. This is a lovely fairy tale romance, for grown ups, as it has seriously sinister undertones.

I enjoyed reading this story and found this unpredictable romance a delight.

Rated 3.5 Delightful Divas by Claudette!

  4. Manic Readers

This is a time travel story, with two distinct stories, one about two hundred years in the past, and the other in the present. The two stories will mesh and overlap, but for the first few chapters, it’s hard to figure out exactly how that will happen.

In the present, Eva, desperate for any kind of job, accepts a strange four month assignment on a luxurious estate, where her only job is to keep the guests happy. It is not specified that sex will enter into keeping them happy,

In the past, Adam, a dissolute lord spends his time in drinking and debauchery, along with his friends. He displeases a witch, who sentences him to a half-life, until he can figure out how to emerge from his enchantment.

In the present, a bunch of young people like Eva are paired up with the guests over the Christmas holiday. Food and drink are plentiful, and Eva is chosen by Adam to be with him for the term.

I hesitate to give away the enchantment, as that is the crux of the whole story, and it was fun to guess about it until it was revealed by the author. Suffice it to say, that Adam and Eva fall in love, but how will the enchantment be broken? There are no clues for her to follow, and Adam has spent two hundred years trying to figure out the solution.

I loved The Kiss, and I think you will, too. The only thing I didn’t find out was if they ended up in present day, or managed to find their way back to Adam’s time, either of which would have been intriguing.

  5. Romantic Times Revies

Posted by Dawn Crowne on 7th Jun 2011

In this very unusual story, readers are taken from the past to the present in alternating chapters. The scenes in historical England as well as in contemporary times give readers deep insights into the characters’ motivations and feelings. While the story’s short length means some questions go unanswered, Adam and Eva’s compelling dilemma is intriguing. Not everyone would make the choices that these characters make, but it is hard not to root for these star-crossed lovers.
Adam Winterwood was thrust into the position as Earl at a young age which causes him to neglect his responsibilities. When a young girl is hurt on the Winterwood estate because of Adam’s carelessness the girl’s grandmother, a witch, curses him to live as a statue. Adam is allowed out of his suspended animation only one week a year.

Two hundred years later, starving artist Eva Diakou agrees to take the job of a house girl at Winterwood even if it means four months on the rural estate without contact with the outside world. Once Eva arrives, she gets paired up with a handsome stranger, Adam, so they can get better acquainted. Not liking the implications of her “job”, Eva decides to leave. However, after a bit of investigation, Eva realizes Adam is cursed and she decides to stay. Eva wants to help the generous and loving Adam break the witch's curse. But when doing so calls for Eva to make a sacrifice, Adam is willing to give up his own future to let Eva go. Will these lovers be able to find happiness together?

  6. Lush, Romantic, Provocative

I stayed up late last night to finish The Kiss by Emma Shortt. Adam Winterwood is trapped as punishment for a crime he didn't commit. He has been waiting for the one person who can keep him alive or set him free, and he's found her in Eva Diakou. But their fates will come down to one thing. The Kiss.

Lush, romantic. provocative. It's no secret I'm a fan of Emma's work, and this one doesn't disappoint. I loved it!

I personally loved this book, I thought it was so steamy and yet amazingly romantic at the same time. It was the perfect love story with an individual, supernatural twist. I also love a happy ending and I got just that.
