 The Layton Family, 2

"I do believe I can arrest you for looking at someone like that. You've got to be breaking some indecency laws."

Taking a deep breath, she recovered her bearings. Mostly. "You're out of your jurisdiction, sheriff."

Dry Creek County Sheriff Hank Layton is the stuff of dreams. Nasty, steamy, delicious fantasies that leave Beth Martinez weak-kneed and desperately wanting the man she can never have.

Hank can’t stop thinking about Beth to the point where he’s afraid of becoming permanently bowlegged. And even though the sexual tension between them is thick enough to trip over, she runs every time he chases.

But when a mysterious developer forces her neighbors off their land, Beth becomes the one person standing between the scoundrel and millions of dollars. Only Hank can help her uncover the truth. Together they risk their lives exposing decades-old secrets and learn that everything is not as it seems in their rural Nebraska town.

Excerpt:

The waiter delivered their drinks. Hank took a long pull from the beer bottle. “I have a proposition to make. Let’s not talk about our day, the crazy people around us or any other general bitching.”

“I’m game.” Beth relaxed back in her seat.

“What should we talk about?”

“The weather?”

He rolled his eyes. “Lame.”

“Politics?”

“Hell, no. I’m trying to eat here.” He popped a chip heavy with salsa into his mouth.

“Okay, so you pick.”

“Sex.” The word came out in a single syllable dare.

The frisson of attraction that normally buzzed in the background whenever she was near Hank moved front and center. It reached out, making her nipples tingle. “I don’t–“

“No specifics,” he interrupted. “Just general factoids. I’ll start. Women who work out have more orgasms than those who don’t.”

“How do you know that?”

“You should know that already, you’re at the gym what, three times a week?”

“Five,” she squeaked out.

The green in his hazel eyes darkened and he stared at her expectantly.

Her breath caught. Damn, she couldn’t think over the dirty movie playing in her head at the moment. But the longer she stayed silent, the greener his eyes turned and the wetter her panties became. Desperate, her brain finally stumbled upon a factoid.

“The most popular flavor of edible underwear is cherry. Totally true, I read it in Cosmo.”

“Cherry’s always been a favorite flavor of mine.”

When did her bra get so tight? It had fit perfectly this morning. Now the lace cups scratched against her hard nipples with enough friction to annoy but not enough to ease the lust turning her brain to mush.

“Got one.” He chuckled softly. “Vegetarians like to give blow jobs more than meat eaters.”

The waiter picked that moment to arrive at their table with a tray loaded down with Mexican food. He acted like he hadn’t heard anything, but the tips of his ears were pink. Keeping his eyes glued to the table, he made fast work of unloading the food, the dishes clanking on the wood table, then sped back into the main dining room.

They busied themselves with filling their plates from the family-style serving dishes. More relaxed than she’d been in months, she snagged an enchilada, cut a chimichanga in half and scooped rice onto her plate. She savored the first bite of cheese and onion wrapped in a handmade corn tortilla. Not as good as abuelita’s, but awful close. Next, a bite of beef chimichanga. The deep fried shell snapped under her fork as she cut off a piece, making sure to get some guacamole with it. The seasoned beef revitalized her tastebuds. She felt more herself with every second that passed.

“It’s not true you know,” she said before taking a second bite of chimichanga.

“What’s that?”

“About blow jobs. Carnivores love oral sex.”

  1. USA Today's Happily Ever After Review

Posted by Unknown on 21st Sep 2012

Small-town attorney Beth Martinez is dead-set against selling her grandmother's house. How can she let go of the one remaining link to the woman who raised her after her parents died? But a lot of people are unhappy with her refusal to sell — like the neighbors, whose contracts are contingent on the sale of every house in the neighborhood. The mystery buyer isn't pleased, either. In fact, someone is unhappy enough to start making threatening phone calls. Beth doesn't understand the desperation to snatch up these properties, since they're nowhere near the planned location of Dry Creek's new casino. But when the pressure accelerates to include vandalism and attempted assault, Beth is forced to accept help from a man she's lusted after for years — the same man she's resolved to forever avoid. Unfortunately, that man has other ideas.
And some of them are quite naughty.
After finally breaking free of a disastrous marriage, Dry Creek County sheriff Hank Layton decides it's time to cozy up to the woman he always considered hands-off — his little sister's best friend. Now that Beth Martinez is all grown up, Hank is looking forward to some serious hands-on. But Beth refuses to acknowledge the desire simmering between them, and when Hank discovers she's being terrorized, he's not only determined to find — and punish — the bully behind the threats, he's hurt by Beth's reluctance to confide in him.
When they both end up in Las Vegas, and an attempt on Beth's life puts Hank in the position of bodyguard, there's no more hiding her passion. She finally surrenders to her desire and experiences a closeness with Hank that overwhelms her — and at the same time saddens her, because she knows she's not the woman he needs. Soon he'll figure that out, too, after she reveals her secret. Assuming they make it out of Vegas alive. Because if the bad guys don't get them, they may just kill each other — in bed.
Whew. Is it just me, or is it hot in here?
If anyone else out there is currently reading Avery Flynn's Seduction Creek, then I know I'm not the only one suffering a personal heat wave. (By the way, the one drawback to reading an e-book is that you can't fan yourself with the pages. Well, I guess you could fan the e-reader, but with my luck I'd give myself a concussion.)
Back to Seduction Creek. I enjoyed the ongoing sizzle between Hank and Beth — when they finally hit the sheets it's pretty darned smokin'. But I also enjoyed the characters themselves, since Flynn gives them unique dimensions to make them as believable as they are interesting. I loved that Beth is Mexican, and is always fiddling with her glasses. Not many heroines have to deal with less than 20/20 vision. And as intimidating as Sheriff Hank can be, he doesn't hesitate to drop everything when his mother claims she needs him. The villain is delightfully unexpected, and so well motivated. This makes for a creepy — and surprisingly sympathetic — character.
Flynn's book manages to be both hot and chilling at the same time. It's also funny — the "sex factoid" exchange in Chapter 1 is a hoot. A few things did manage to occasionally distract me from the story. Soon after Beth suffers a serious injury she and Hank have sex, and though her bandages are mentioned, I found it difficult to accept that she could be such an ardent partner, considering the pain she must be in. Also, I would love to have seen earlier the excellent reason Beth takes so long to reveal her secret to Hank. Finally, the text contains several copy-editing errors, which results in some awkward narrative.
None of the above stopped me from finding several favorite passages. In the excerpt below, Hank has rushed to Beth's side after discovering she's been in a car accident:
Hank fisted his free hand and fought to calm his jumpy nerves. Yep, he was out of his jurisdiction, out of his league, out of luck and out of his mind for wanting Beth. Badly.
His gaze combed over her from her silky brown hair to the tips of her red cowboy boots. Her glasses were a little cockeyed, but she didn't have a scratch on her and for the first time since he heard about the accident, something inside him loosened.
And here, Hank and Beth are seeking refuge in a wedding chapel on the Strip:
The Little Elvis Wedding Chapel didn't look any better in the light of day. It looked a hell of a lot worse.
In a town full of tacky, this velvet and gold shrine to a man who died on his toilet stood in a class of its own. A six-foot-tall papier-mâché Elvis in a well-filled-out white jumpsuit with a suspicious eye stood next to a large hand-printed sign urging the marriage inclined not to spill their drinks as they walked down the aisle.
LOL. As you can see, Flynn is a versatile writer. And while you're checking out this and her first book in the Layton Family Series, Temptation Creek, I'll be standing in front of an open refrigerator door.

  2. Night Owl Romance Reviews

Posted by Unknown on 21st Sep 2012

    Plot & Characters:

Seduction Creek is a fabulous addition to Ms. Flynn's The Layton Family Series. With a tornado of a mystery to solve and a heated connection between the two main characters there's not a page in this book that didn't deliver a darn good story. Ms. Flynn's writing style turned me back onto romantic suspense, showing me there is such a thing as having both elements in one book. And she added another element that endears me to this series, the sense of family. The strength and fortitude you find in knowing someone's got your back...even if you think you don't need it!

From the opening we see a young version of the main character, Beth Martinez, right before her life would forever change her into the adult she is today-closed off emotionally, guarded and convinced she can't have the one man that takes her breath away. In walks the one man that should be even more leery of women, but Sheriff Hank Layton has lusted after Beth for longer than he can remember. He's bent on making her see how well they fit together but that plan gets hijacked by a roller-coaster ride of attempts on Beth's life and a wicked mystery of revenge laced with deceit. What is for one person an inconvenience, ignored for nearly twenty years, festers for another into a deadly game that nearly takes Hank down along side Beth in a spiderweb of lies and in a small town, digging up skeletons is always a deadly game.

From one page into the next Ms. Flynn has woven a delicious romance in between solving who is out to hurt Beth or worse. It's always great to see the big tough guys discover their lust is more love and that is exactly what happens in this story. However, the author has a wicked talent at making the characters really delve deep into their hearts and souls to discover what they really want before delivering that happily ever after we love. Beth is a hurt and emotionally scared woman that has lost a lot. It takes a lot more than a sexy smile and a smooth caress to give her the peace her heart seeks. Hank Layton has his job cut out for him in Seduction Creek.

Through some pretty crafty twists and turns, by the end all is uncovered and the threat extinguished, but the feelings between the hero and heroine only became hotter! I loved the beginning and middle, but the ending part of the story...that's what melted my heart.

    Writing:

Avery Flynn writes with a talented, energetic and emotionally charged prose that grabs a hold of you from the opening. I've read two of her books so far and I've found this to be true for both books. I've said it before but here it is again, Ms. Avery Flynn writes with wild fire!

    Summary:

A romantic suspense that grabs you, ties your mind up with the burning question of who is behind the curtain while delivering a romance that's burning hot! Ms. Flynn knows what to give her readers and this series, this book, is a must read! Loved it!

  3. Fallen Angel Reviews

Posted by Unknown on 1st Aug 2012

Beth Martinez has been in love with Hank Layton since she was a child. But the brother of her best friend has always been off limits. Now the Sherriff of Dry Creek, hank tries to help Beth find out whom or what is behind all the threats against her. Someone wants her to sell her house and the violence escalates. Will they discover who is behind the plot in time to save Beth?

Book two in the Layton Family series starts with a bang. I am coming to expect this from Ms. Flynn. She just has a way of crafting a suspenseful tale that draws you in and doesn't want to let go! I love that she isn't afraid to add some blood and violence to her books. It just adds to the suspense of the mysteries and the peril of the characters. In this story, we get to learn more about the Layton family. The hot brothers and their sister are wonderfully written. The family dynamics are detailed and feel real. I always feel like I am watching my kids when they are fighting. Of course, the matriarch is my favorite of the whole family. That woman really knows how to kick ass and take names. I really look forward to reading more about her too in the future books in this series.

On a side note, in reading the books, I (and possibly you) have noticed that red is mentioned. A LOT. I am assuming it is because the state in which this fictitious town resides is Nebraska and that is the college color. It caught my notice though and now I find myself searching for the mention of red fingernails here and a red bra there. That being said, once I noticed it, I started paying more attention. Ms. Flynn is detailed when she describes things. To the point that I feel like I am right there experiencing it, but it isn't over the top. I feel that the pointed mentions of color (because it isn't just red) enhances the descriptions and makes it easier to picture. Now I don't know if other authors do it and I just never really noticed it. Or, if maybe, I just noticed it because I was looking for the mentions of red. Whichever the case, it really enhances the writing and is yet another reason I am enjoying these books so much.

  4. Reviewed at The TBR Pile

    Posted by thetbrpile.weebly.com on 2nd May 2012

I can describe this book in one word: Perfection. Seriously, Seduction Creek should be on the New York Times Bestseller List.

The story unfolds and I was sucked into the plot. Pages turned, chapters flew by and suddenly the end arrived. Their budding relationship was hot but so freaking romantic! The ending was full of action and utterly sweet.

If you love romance with a side of action, Seduction Creek is a must read!

  5. Great Romantic Suspense

Posted by Unknown on 1st Apr 2012

I just love Ms. Flynn. She writes some of the best romantic suspense out there. I know that A Dry Creek Bed is only her second book but its a dozy. I loved Up a Dry Creek, too but for me, Hank and Beth were the bomb.

Beth was orphaned as a little girl and went to live with your beloved grandparents. The Layton family were her adoptive family. She and Claire Layton are best friends to the end. Growing up together, Beth was always around the Layton boys. Quietly falling in love with Hank as a teenager, she knew that she could never have him. She never thought that she would ever need his protection from a sadistic killer or that he would feel the same way about her. While she would love to pursue a relationship with Hank, she can't give him something that he wants desperately.

Hank is one hot, sexy Sheriff. When things start happening to Beth and her grandmother's house, he knows that by law he can't help her. But when they see each other on a plane bound for Las Vegas, the chemistry between them heats up as the killer raises the stakes just as high. Hank has had a thing for Beth since she was a teenager and has always backed off because she was Claire's friend. As adults, his relentless pursuit of her seems to just scare her off. Not anymore. He will have her and help her unravel the mystery if its the last thing he does.

I can not empathize how much Hank and Beth scorched the pages. Between their dialogue, sizzling sex and familial interactions, I really needed a drink after I read it. The suspense plot was deftly woven in the story not as filler but as the springboard to their romance and why Beth runs from Hank every time they get close. The other three Layton brothers make an appearance or two in the book and I can not wait for Sam's story.

Overall, Ms. Flynn brings the whole package in romantic suspense. A villain and their reasoning are so intricate that it wasn't into the end of the book that I realized just how far deep the secret went. Great job! The romance in the book was off the charts and hot. You can tell that Hank & Beth really did love each other. It just took an almost death to get both of them to realize it. The plot, pacing, dialogue and the use of secondary characters are great, too. Run, don't walk to pick up A Dry Creek Bed. You will not be disappointed.
