 The Layton Family, 2

"I do believe I can arrest you for looking at someone like that. You've got to be breaking some indecency laws."

Taking a deep breath, she recovered her bearings. Mostly. "You're out of your jurisdiction, sheriff."

Dry Creek County Sheriff Hank Layton is the stuff of dreams. Nasty, steamy, delicious fantasies that leave Beth Martinez weak-kneed and desperately wanting the man she can never have.

Hank can’t stop thinking about Beth to the point where he’s afraid of becoming permanently bowlegged. And even though the sexual tension between them is thick enough to trip over, she runs every time he chases.

But when a mysterious developer forces her neighbors off their land, Beth becomes the one person standing between the scoundrel and millions of dollars. Only Hank can help her uncover the truth. Together they risk their lives exposing decades-old secrets and learn that everything is not as it seems in their rural Nebraska town.

Excerpt:

The waiter delivered their drinks. Hank took a long pull from the beer bottle. “I have a proposition to make. Let’s not talk about our day, the crazy people around us or any other general bitching.”

“I’m game.” Beth relaxed back in her seat.

“What should we talk about?”

“The weather?”

He rolled his eyes. “Lame.”

“Politics?”

“Hell, no. I’m trying to eat here.” He popped a chip heavy with salsa into his mouth.

“Okay, so you pick.”

“Sex.” The word came out in a single syllable dare.

The frisson of attraction that normally buzzed in the background whenever she was near Hank moved front and center. It reached out, making her nipples tingle. “I don’t–“

“No specifics,” he interrupted. “Just general factoids. I’ll start. Women who work out have more orgasms than those who don’t.”

“How do you know that?”

“You should know that already, you’re at the gym what, three times a week?”

“Five,” she squeaked out.

The green in his hazel eyes darkened and he stared at her expectantly.

Her breath caught. Damn, she couldn’t think over the dirty movie playing in her head at the moment. But the longer she stayed silent, the greener his eyes turned and the wetter her panties became. Desperate, her brain finally stumbled upon a factoid.

“The most popular flavor of edible underwear is cherry. Totally true, I read it in Cosmo.”

“Cherry’s always been a favorite flavor of mine.”

When did her bra get so tight? It had fit perfectly this morning. Now the lace cups scratched against her hard nipples with enough friction to annoy but not enough to ease the lust turning her brain to mush.

“Got one.” He chuckled softly. “Vegetarians like to give blow jobs more than meat eaters.”

The waiter picked that moment to arrive at their table with a tray loaded down with Mexican food. He acted like he hadn’t heard anything, but the tips of his ears were pink. Keeping his eyes glued to the table, he made fast work of unloading the food, the dishes clanking on the wood table, then sped back into the main dining room.

They busied themselves with filling their plates from the family-style serving dishes. More relaxed than she’d been in months, she snagged an enchilada, cut a chimichanga in half and scooped rice onto her plate. She savored the first bite of cheese and onion wrapped in a handmade corn tortilla. Not as good as abuelita’s, but awful close. Next, a bite of beef chimichanga. The deep fried shell snapped under her fork as she cut off a piece, making sure to get some guacamole with it. The seasoned beef revitalized her tastebuds. She felt more herself with every second that passed.

“It’s not true you know,” she said before taking a second bite of chimichanga.

“What’s that?”

“About blow jobs. Carnivores love oral sex.”

I can describe this book in one word: Perfection. Seriously, Seduction Creek should be on the New York Times Bestseller List.

The story unfolds and I was sucked into the plot. Pages turned, chapters flew by and suddenly the end arrived. Their budding relationship was hot but so freaking romantic! The ending was full of action and utterly sweet.

If you love romance with a side of action, Seduction Creek is a must read!

  2. Great Romantic Suspense

Posted by Unknown on 1st Apr 2012

I just love Ms. Flynn. She writes some of the best romantic suspense out there. I know that A Dry Creek Bed is only her second book but its a dozy. I loved Up a Dry Creek, too but for me, Hank and Beth were the bomb.

Beth was orphaned as a little girl and went to live with your beloved grandparents. The Layton family were her adoptive family. She and Claire Layton are best friends to the end. Growing up together, Beth was always around the Layton boys. Quietly falling in love with Hank as a teenager, she knew that she could never have him. She never thought that she would ever need his protection from a sadistic killer or that he would feel the same way about her. While she would love to pursue a relationship with Hank, she can't give him something that he wants desperately.

Hank is one hot, sexy Sheriff. When things start happening to Beth and her grandmother's house, he knows that by law he can't help her. But when they see each other on a plane bound for Las Vegas, the chemistry between them heats up as the killer raises the stakes just as high. Hank has had a thing for Beth since she was a teenager and has always backed off because she was Claire's friend. As adults, his relentless pursuit of her seems to just scare her off. Not anymore. He will have her and help her unravel the mystery if its the last thing he does.

I can not empathize how much Hank and Beth scorched the pages. Between their dialogue, sizzling sex and familial interactions, I really needed a drink after I read it. The suspense plot was deftly woven in the story not as filler but as the springboard to their romance and why Beth runs from Hank every time they get close. The other three Layton brothers make an appearance or two in the book and I can not wait for Sam's story.

Overall, Ms. Flynn brings the whole package in romantic suspense. A villain and their reasoning are so intricate that it wasn't into the end of the book that I realized just how far deep the secret went. Great job! The romance in the book was off the charts and hot. You can tell that Hank & Beth really did love each other. It just took an almost death to get both of them to realize it. The plot, pacing, dialogue and the use of secondary characters are great, too. Run, don't walk to pick up A Dry Creek Bed. You will not be disappointed.

I enjoyed the banter between Beth and Hank. From the beginning you can feel the sexual tension between the two. With a few twists this book rocks. You will not want to put it down at all. I love this series and can’t wait for the next book.

  8. RT Book Reviews calls it "molten hot"

Posted by Romantic Times Book Reviews on 3rd Jan 2012

The second novel in Flynn’s Dry series is molten hot. Readers will love catching up with characters from the first book and adore the two characters at center stage of this one. Genuine chemistry between the characters and an intriguing story keep this novel moving forward.

Beth Martinez wants to find out who is trying to terrorize her into selling her grandparents’ home but she is getting no cooperation from the local sheriff. Enter Hank Layton, the older brother of her childhood best friend. The two sparked off each other for years, but now Beth needs Hank’s help as the sheriff, not as a lover.

Hank wants to help her, but he does not count on falling in love with her. Beth tries not to get involved with Hank because she can’t give him the one thing he has always wanted: children. As she fights the attraction, the danger builds around her, and she is going to have to trust him with everything — including her heart.
