The Layton Family, 1

Claire Layton expects the usual busy Saturday night at Harvest Bistro to be killer on her stilletto shod feet. She never imagines there’d be an actual murderer on the loose at her restaurant in rural Dry Creek, Nebraska. But when she discovers a customer dead in a dumpster, the killer demands she find the victim’s phone and flash drive or face fatal consequenses.

Jake Warrick, a cocky and mind-numbingly hot private investigator, becomes Claire’s unlikely ally in the search. Jake just wants to solve the case and get out of this hick town, but the diminutive and curvaceous Claire turns his plan upside down as they uncover a more complex crime than they ever imagined. The two bicker and banter like Tracy and Hepburn caught in a whirlwind of intense sexual attraction as they try to find the killer before it’s too late.

Excerpt

Desperate to put something in her mouth before she said something stupid, Claire reached for another slice of pizza but hesitated. Her hand hovered over the only piece left.

“We can arm wrestle for the last slice.” Jake’s voice warmed her skin as if he’d touched her.

Claire took in his thick biceps. Without thinking, she reached out toward him, but squashed the impulse. Memories of Brett had her on guard again. Jake was the definition of eye candy; pretty to look at, bad for her heart. Her hand switched course. She grabbed her beer and took a swig.

A mouthful of the dark liquid went down the wrong pipe. Coughing, she gasped for breath. Jake patted her back until she regained her normal breathing ability.

But his hand didn’t move. It stayed between her shoulder blades, fingers spread wide. Sparks shot outward from his palm through her body.

Her breath slowed. Awareness prickled her skin. She yearned for his touch. Everywhere. Her lips parted. Slowly, she turned around. His hand left a trail of fire as it slid down and around her body until it landed on the curve of her hip.

He brought up his other hand to brush a stray hair from her face. His slate blue eyes drew her in to his sexual orbit.

“You have some sauce right here.” His voice’s deep timbre sent an unmistakable signal to which her body responded. Her breasts became full and heavy. Her clit demanded attention.

He wiped the spot by the corner of her mouth with his thumb, then tracked the red liquid across her bottom lip. His head dipped lower. Hers moved up. When their lips met, thoughts of Brett and the Voice of Doom disappeared.

His firm tongue stroked her lips and begged to be let in. She opened and his tongue swept in. She wrapped her tongue around his, dared him to taste his fill. The hand on her hip tightened, and pulled her closer to his hard body. In return, her fingers found their way to the bottom of his T-shirt and started an upward exploration. His coarse chest hair tickled her palm, so alien and enticing at the same time.

His lips left hers and traced down her neck. He arrived at that sweet spot where her throat met her shoulder. Her spine dissolved as he sucked and nibbled.

“You taste so good,” he said, his breath hot against her skin.

The feel of his hands cupping her ass made it impossible to respond verbally other than to moan her appreciation. Her body slid up against his as he lifted her to sit on the kitchen counter. He yanked her closer. The hard bulge in his jeans rubbed against her in the perfect spot.

Every part of her, relaxed only a few minutes before, hummed with tension. Her nipples stiffened into tight nubs. She squeezed her legs around Jake’s waist, her wet core snug against him. She clutched at his shirt, desperate to touch his skin. She needed him closer. Her body demanded it. The endorphins wrapped around her brain gave the go ahead.

She hiked up his shirt and ran her hands up his strong back, felt the tension within him. He tugged her scoop necked T-shirt lower and his lips descended to the top of her cleavage. He licked and kissed above her teal bra.

Claire’s butt started to vibrate.

Not Jake making my ass vibrate.

It was her phone stuffed into her back pocket. She had to stop to answer. Her body screamed no.

“Phone,” Claire panted. She pushed against Jake’s shoulders. “Have… to… answer… my… phone.”

He groaned into her breasts, put his hands on the counter on either side of her hips and lifted his head. The dark look in his eyes showed he hated this interruption as much as she did.

She got lost for a moment in those slate blue eyes. She wanted him. Now. Here on the counter next to the almost empty pizza box. The vibration stopped, but began again a second later. Jake swung her down so she stood again on the kitchen’s taupe tile.

“You’d better answer that.” He backed away, his desire palpable.

Claire reached into her back pocket, warm from Jake’s touch, and pulled out the scarlet phone.

“Hello?” Her voice sounded breathy to her own ears.

“You know, I don’t like to work this hard for the things I want. Do you understand what I’m telling you?”

Panic exploded in her stomach at the first syllable from the Voice of Doom. Claire looked up at Jake, who cocked his head in question.

“I understand. You want the phone and flash drive, but I don’t have them. I looked everywhere.”

Jake stepped closer. He leaned his head toward the phone. She angled it outward so he could listen.

“Your lack of results have, well… Sweetheart, I’m not the kind of guy you want angry.” His voice pitched lower. “Lucky for me, I’m not angry. I. Am. Furious.”

Claire’s temper snapped. Again. This nutcase killed Kendall. He threatened her and her family. He trashed her house. And he had the gall to go all drama king on her for something she didn’t have and couldn’t find? She’d had enough.

“Welcome to the club asshole, because I’m not too happy myself after the job you did on my house.”

“Just wait, Kitten, you haven’t seen anything yet.” He hung up on her. Again.

  1. Coffee Time Romance Reviews

Claire Layton, owner of the Harvest Bistro restaurant in rural Nebraska, is shocked to find a body in the dumpster behind her business. What is more, the killer believes Claire has something belonging to the victim and demands it back.

Hot Private Investigator, Jake Warrick, is hired to go to the sleepy town of Dry Creek and solve a case. When sexy and fiery Claire Layton enters the picture, things begin to heat up and complications quickly arise.

Claire Layton is a happy restaurant owner in the quiet sleepy town of Dry Creek, Nebraska. Then a dead body and a hunky private detective throw her life into chaos. After already swearing off men like Jake Warrick, Claire will find it increasingly difficult to monitor her attraction to him as the killer becomes more determined to get to her. Can Jake protect her? Does she want him to?

Ms. Flynn is a gifted storyteller. Her writing is well-crafted and she certainly knows her way around a sentence. She also masters the ability to heat up the page through evocative sex scenes, provoking the imagination into a vivid enactment of character chemistry and interaction. Although entertaining, I did struggle with some elements of believability and initially became distracted at times with a little too much information. The latter part quickly faded, however, and I became engrossed in the plight of the two main characters. Humor and suspense elements collide and overall, this was a good book. Avery Flynn is a writer to keep an eye on.

  2. Fallen Angel Reviews

Claire Layton expects another busy night at work. She doesn't expect to find a dead body in her dumpster. She definitely does not expect the threatening phone call that follows. With her family in danger the last thing Claire needs is cocky, private investigator Jake Warrick interfering. Neither of them expects the instant chemistry that does nothing but complicate things. Will she get what the killer needs in time or will Jake get in her way?

I have been eager to begin reading the Layton Family series and am excited to have finally begun it. This book rocks! The characters are sassy and the family dynamic was wonderful. Can I just say the Layton matriarch was a terrific character? I hope we will be seeing more of her in future books. Ms. Flynn did such an amazing job of writing real and interesting characters that I wanted to read about. The chemistry between the hero and heroine was palpable.

Ms. Flynn also has a way with a mystery. This suspenseful story had me in its grip from the minute the dead body was found and never let go. The mystery was twisty and even though I knew there had to be more to it, I was still surprised. I have to say that my family was probably tired of hearing me say, "Not now! I'm right at a good part." They finally just left me alone to finish the story. Just when you thought you knew what was going to happen next, you were blindsided. It was fabulous. In closing, I would just like to say (without giving away too much) that we are left with a heck of a cliffhanger. I was ready to start the next book right away.

Dry Creek is one of those towns where people are friendly. Everyone knows each other and they look out for one another. Claire Layton makes her living with her restaurant Harvest. One particular night, however, Harvest in Dry Creek is NOT the place to be...when a body is found, murdered.

That's enough to shake up someone's ordinary world. It certainly did Claire's. Consider this spitfire scared, with great reason. It gets even worse with anonymous calls from someone Claire dubs 'The Voice of Doom'. Who is that exactly? That remains a mystery. Does it have anything to do with the dead body? That remains to be seen.

Then comes Jake Warrick. He's snarky, mysterious, and sexy. He gets Claire all hot and bothered. Jake isn't the enemy, even if he is trying to gather information. One thing we know about Jake right off the bat? He's not looking for love or to settle down. Isn't that the great thing about fate? What one may want, Fate has another plan. Despite Jake's best efforts, his feelings for Claire go beyond lust and sexual desire. His need to protect her is strong, though he still has a job to do.

The powerful attraction between the two creates plenty of tension and sizzling sexual energy. The plot is full of suspense, a bit of sarcasm, and sexy banter between Claire and Jake. There's a few small editing mishaps, but not enough to take my attention away from this captivating suspenseful tale. Readers will be pulled in on a wild goose chase, and I was guessing straight up until the end. The love scenes are erotic, but not over the top and not too many.

Up a Dry Creek is full of heat, mystery, and characters that are believable and likable (except for the villains, of course!) The story is wrapped up well, though there is a hint of things to come with another story with new characters. I hope so, because I would love to come back to Dry Creek and learn more about the people in this town.

If you're looking for a romantic suspense that will keep you riveted, then don't miss the chance to meet the townspeople of Dry Creek. Grab yourself a chair, and don't forget your copy of this story!

    TOP PICK REVIEW!

    TEASER:

Claire laid the gun down on the bar and sank onto a stool. Her stomach twisted and cramped. She laid her head down on the dark wood. The cool surface calmed her riotous nerves, gave her a chance to think for a moment. She’d made the right move. Really, she never had another choice.

Sirens cried in the distance. With a relieved sigh, she slid off the stool. Her knees shook a bit, but she maintained her somewhat wobbly stance. She’d always heard it seemed like forever for law enforcement to respond. Now she understood what they meant.

    FIRST LINE:

Claire Layton readied herself to placate a dragon.

    PLOT:

Up A Dry Creek starts off with an energy that just doesn't let up until the end. I usually do not read romantic suspense because of the slower pace I normally find, however that is not the case with this book or this author. She knows how to deliver a suspenseful plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat, mixed with a romance that is just as powerful. I thought both the romantic and suspenseful aspects were well balanced and woven together to create a well balanced story. The plot twists kept coming, and had me guessing throughout the entire book. I loved the quick succession of events and the hot romance between Claire and Jake, the two main characters. The author wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty with the secondary characters and made the villain as nasty as they come which only added grit and depth to the book. Ms. Flynn didn't let me down at the end either. Her twists and turns lead to a powerful ending and wrapped up with a happy ending. She also left an awesome clue as to what the next Dry Creek Book will entail. All together, this book has lead me to find an author that I just have to add to my MUST-READ list.

    SETTING:

Up A Dry Creek Takes place in Dry Creek, Nebraska where treachery and love are pushed beyond all boundaries and possible new beginnings are born.

    WRITING:

Ms. Flynn's knows how to write with wild fire! She can bend it to do her will and create an amazing ride for all to enjoy! She writes amazing characters and I love her ability to never have a dull moment in her books.

    CHARACTERS:

Claire Layton is one spunky and sassy lady that knows how to keep herself in troubles way at all times. She also knows how to dish out the whoop-ass when needed. I loved her tender heart and enjoyed watching her learn to trust and love again. It is that very thing that has me hooked on the romance genre in the first place. This is one heroine I'd love to call my best friend because she would go to the ends of the world to help those around her. I thought Jake the perfect man to pull her out of her fear of loving again and into a world only lived by those in love. His iron clad determination proved he was willing to fight for her even when he tried to convince himself he only wanted a one night love affair; get the job done and go home kind of deal with Claire. Later in the book his inner struggle to come to terms with his weaknesses where Claire is concerned also warmed my heart up to him because I got to see behind the curtain so to speak. The secondary characters and villain were just as interesting but I will run into giving out spoilers if I continue. i'll leave you to discover who exactly is behind the mystery.

Very well developed characters all around and I am looking forward to the next in the series!

    LAST THOUGHTS:

If you love a great romantic suspense, Up A Dry Creek is for you! Ms. Flynn delivers in all aspects and ends with an enticing hook for the next in the series! Until then, I have already added all of her books to my must-have list to tie me over!

  5. Happily Ever After Reviews

Posted by Lia on 1st Sep 2011

The instant I started to read Up a Dry Creek I was thrown into a suspenseful adventure with entertaining characters and a great plot. It’s a fast moving novella and before I knew it, I was on the last page.

When restaurant owner Clair Layton finds a body in her dumpster, she is shocked and terrified, yet that’s only the beginning. The killer thinks she has something that she doesn’t and he’s not going to stop until she turns over the item or dies. Clair was a very entertaining character. A spitfire redhead, she was temperamental, feisty, and smart. Her dog, Onion, stole the show at times and I was absolutely entertained by those characters. Jake, the hero, was modeled after many women’s hearts. He was strong and brave and oh so sexy. The romance was hot and steamy and at times I was afraid my ereader will melt.

The plot itself was very entertaining. Although the mystery part was very predictable, I still enjoyed the story in itself. The villains were evil and scary even if as a reader you know who they were a mile away.

In the middle of the book it seemed like the mystery dried up and was replaced with hot romance. Although I didn’t mind that, I felt like the author was about to leave us with a bunch of unanswered questions. Luckily, near the end of the story she continued writing the mystery storyline again until the end. I did hope that the middle would have had some mystery in it too, to balance out the suspense and the romance. It felt a bit scattered. Besides that, however, the book was perfect.

The ending was great. I will not spoil it for anyone but I can say that Ms Flynn broke a big rule by ending the book with a question. Now, us poor readers will have to wait for book two to come out just to get that answer. Oh, and believe me, I’m waiting for the next book to come.

If you’re a fan of suspense with hot romance, give this a try. It’s one of my favorite books that I’ve read this year and I couldn’t wait until book two in this series.

  6. Manic Readers

Claire Layton owns a restaurant in a small town. When she finds a body in the dumpster while emptying the trash, she suddenly becomes the target for someone who wants the dead woman’s phone and a data stick. Claire would give them up if she could find them, and can’t understand why the killer thinks she might have them.

Claire has three tough brothers who are trying to take care of her and keep her safe, along with a private security guy named Jake Warrick, but even with these guys protecting her, her house is ransacked, her restaurant burned down, and she is at her wit’s end.

The dead girl’s father also seems to be more intent on finding the missing items than finding his daughter’s killer, which Jake finds strange.

While they investigate leads in the murder, they hook up, and are greatly disconcerted to find that the killer is watching their every move, including the ones in bed.

Up a Dry Creek is a great murder mystery, with lots of twists and turns. What is on the computer data stick, and whose numbers will they find on the phone? You’ll have to take this one down to the beach and read it to find out.

"Quirky, funny, and full of action..."

The day could not get any worse after dealing with her temperamental sous chef and doing her best to keep her restaurant afloat. So when Claire Layton finds a dead body in the back by the dumpsters, could things get worse? In Claire’s world it certainly can, not only is she getting threats from the Voice of Doom, who is ready to claim his next victim, she has Security officer Jake Warrick who has been hired to investigate the death of the body she found, not only is he incredibly hot but he has a way of making her temper flare at every turn.

Jake has never met a woman who can infuriate him, arouse him, and have his head spinning so quickly until he meets Claire. With her spunk, sass, and waspish ways of laying it all out there, he finds himself completely smitten and having a difficult time keeping her alive as well as keeping his hands off her. As the danger continues to elevate, so does the heat between Claire and Jake, but can they both stay alive long enough to have a future?

Quirky, funny, and full of action, Up A Dry Creek by debut author Avery Flynn. Claire is hilarious and takes no prisoners with her way of handling things. Jake is all alpha but he is having a hard time keeping Claire in line, the book is filled with tons of characters who you will love, Claire’s mama is a favorite. Fantastic first book for the Dry Creek series.

  8. Review at The TBR Pile

    Posted by thetbrpile.weebly on 17th Jul 2011

Up a Dry Creek captured my attention from the get go! When Claire finds a dead body in her garbage can, she becomes the target of a madman. Jake is brought in by the young girl’s family to investigate the murder and is instantly attracted to Claire. While fighting their attraction in order to find the person that killed the young woman, they soon realize that their sexual chemistry is more than either one can handle. As the investigation heats up, so do the feelings between Claire and Jake. We soon learn that all is not well with the family that hired Jake and we are thrown into suspense filled drama.

If I had not heard it from the author’s own mouth, I would never have guessed this was Avery Flynn’s very first novel. Her writing technique is very reminiscent of Lora Leigh, Lori Foster and Nora Roberts; who are three of my favorite authors.

Ms. Flynn knows exactly how to write a female lead; she knows that they can be vulnerable, yet fierce at the same time. She knows that not all women need an alpha male to solidify her as a person. Claire Layton is a tough as nails, smart-mouthed woman that I would definitely call my friend!!! Jake Warrick is the epitome of an alpha male, yet he knows when he has met his match in a woman.

I loved the ending of this book and can not wait to see what happens next in The Dry Creek Series!

  9. A Fun, Quick Read

Posted by Wicked Little Pixie on 11th Jul 2011

    “Things I liked:

The voice. Avery has a fun writing style that had me chuckling a time or two, especially in narratives from Claire’s perspective.

The length. Although, as I said, I usually prefer longer novels (I usually end up feeling like I didn’t get enough story from a novella), the length of this piece was just right for a short, fun, whodunit.

There’s a great, surprise ending scene that sets up for an interesting sequel. (Claire has 3 older brothers, and I’m assuming they’ll all get their own story.)

The mom. Claire’s mom cracked me up! She doesn’t appear in many scenes, but when she’s around, she steals the show!"

  10. Nicely Done Avery Flynn!

Posted by Crystal Book Reviews on 11th Jul 2011

“Secrets thread through the past of Claire, Jake, the murdered girl, and her family. The steamy sex happening fairly quickly and the gradually revealed motives behind this crime rivet the reader to the pages, reading and flipping at an outrageous rate, just as the outrageous relationship titillates and wavers in a consistent cycle of unremitting passion.

Up A Dry Creek is hot romantic fiction with a mystery to solve that keeps one solidly engaged to the very last page. Nicely done, Avery Flynn! “
