When Kierra Centrand was sixteen she had the best night of her young life…and the worst. Bryan Donaldson took her to her first party, kissed her, then had to save her life when her grandparent’s home exploded, taking everyone she loved. Ten years later, she returned to the small town, a shadow of that young girl, but determined to find out the truth. Did her stepfather murder her family? And did he die with them, or was he still out there somewhere? Waiting for her? Ms. Evans has created a chilling tale with some really strong characters in “Hiding in Plain Sight.” Kierra was sure her stepfather was responsible but no one believed a traumatized 16-year-old. Alone in foster care, she spent the following years closed down, trying to make herself invisible, even as she fought to regain a bit of self-confidence. This is a very realistic reaction to the kind of past and horrific incident the character has lived through. It was very well handled. The character, Bryan, was only seventeen at the time he saved Kierra. His father was the chief of police and ruled the explosion an accident. Ten years later, he’s now the sheriff, but he’s more willing to consider Kierra’s version of the tragedy. Bryan is strong and understands loyalty and duty, but in dealing with a woman, he’s as clueless as any other man. Jack Bennett, the murderous stepfather, was one of the darkest characters I’ve read in a long time. While, personally, Jack is the kind of villain that can normally scare me right out of a story, he was perfect for this book, especially in the way his actions force Kierra’s ultimate transformation. The writing is top notch and the story keeps your heart racing. It’s hard to put the book down once Kierra realizes she’s in danger. Both Kierra and Bryan grow and change throughout the story, learning to love and trust again, and isn’t that what we want from a love story? I definitely enjoyed the climax, feeling Bryan’s torment and pain as he tries to save Kierra once again. If you like romantic suspense, put this one on your summer reading list.
Hidden Dangers, 1
"...breathtaking romantic suspense!" —Roxanne St. Claire, New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author
Kierra Centerand was once vivacious and outgoing, but that all changed the night her stepfather killed her family in an explosion that authorities wrote off as an accident. Now, ten years later, Kierra has returned to the small town of Briarview to find answers, confront her demons, and see if she can finally move on with her life. Not much has changed, Briarview is still the quaint, charming, small town Kierra left behind. Only now her high school boyfriend, Bryan, is the sheriff, and her stepfather is somewhere in the town, hiding in plain sight.
When Bryan Donaldson sees Kierra again for the first time, he is surprised—she’s no longer the fun blonde he remembers, but rather she’s shy, prone to panic attacks, and hiding from the world. When Kierra’s stepfather starts making threats, Bryan is determined to keep her safe in his arms, and in his bed, for life.
He watched as she enjoyed another sip of her coffee. She loved coffee more than anyone he had ever known. Drinking coffee had never been something he considered sexy before he shared a morning cup with her. If she kissed half as sensually as she sipped that coffee, he was in trouble.
She glanced up and met his eyes over the rim of her coffee cup and he even found the pink blush that crept up her face appealing. She was cupping the mug with both hands, and holding it near her face as if it were a delicate flower to be carried carefully and inhaled deeply.
“You make good coffee,” she said into the growing silence.
Maybe it was a mistake, but he decided it was time to press her and figure her out.
Without a word Bryan reached out across his small kitchen and took the mug from her hands, setting it on the counter behind her. He stepped forward and instantly saw the change in her eyes when she realized his intent. She went from eager and sexy to cautious and hiding in the blink of an eye.
“Don't do that,” he ordered her.
“What?” She glanced around desperately looking for a way out of the kitchen, this conversation, and his arms as they loosely held her captive against the counter.
“Don't get all skittish and wary on me. I know you're as attracted to me as I am to you, and I also know that scares the hell out of you, but you don't have to be scared of me, or with me. Ever.” He made sure to hold her gaze as he spoke, he wouldn't let her look away. He wanted to be sure she understood everything he was saying, and a whole lot of what he wasn't saying. He was going to have her in his bed, he could guarantee that. He wanted her under him and begging for release, and he would have it, no matter what he had to do to get her there.
He kept his arms relaxed, and gripped the counter on either side of her hips. All she had to do was tell him to back off and he would. But he was going to make her say it if that's what she wanted, because he knew damn well it wasn't at all what she wanted any more than it was what he wanted.
Slowly, keeping his eyes fixed on hers until the last second, he lowered his head and took her mouth in his. As much as he told himself he knew what she wanted, he could have shouted in relief when her mouth came open willingly under his. He fought to keep his hands on the counter and not bury them in her hair. As much as he hated the color of it, he would have loved to fill his hands with it and pull her even closer.
Go slowly, he reminded himself, but his erection was already straining against the jeans he had thrown on quickly while she was in the bathroom. He craved the feeling of her pressed against him, but he needed to make sure she was ready. If she bolted on him he might never get her here again.
He made himself content with the feeling of her tongue sliding against his and her arms sliding up around his neck, playing with the hair at the base of his neck. She tasted like the coffee he had made for her, and she smelled like sleep, woman, and everything sexy. He groaned and adjusted the kiss slightly so that it deepened and he was rewarded with a noise that sounded a lot like a purr from Kierra's throat.
Gathering up every shred of his self-control, Bryan ended the kiss, resting his forehead against hers and waiting for her to open her eyes. For a moment he thought she would hide behind her closed eyelids forever, but eventually she opened her eyes and met his with an expression that could only be described as wonder.
“Wow,” she whispered, causing Bryan to smile.
“Yeah, you could say that. As much as I'd love to stay here and kiss you all day long, I need to get to the office and see if any hits came back on your dad.”
“Stepfather. He's not my dad. Actually, I don't know who my dad is, but I know who it isn't, and it isn't him. We're not blood relatives. He was just another poor choice my mother made in her life.”
The wall was definitely back around her now. Even though neither of them had moved, the mention of her stepfather was enough to make her guarded and withdrawn, which only made him want to pull her close and kiss her senseless some more just to watch the walls crumble all over again.
Kierra pushed back against Bryan's chest, putting some space between them. That only served to frustrate him further. He knew better than to push her, but dammit he couldn't help himself.
“I bring up your dad.” He held up a hand before she could say anything. “Sorry, stepdad, I know he's not your father, and suddenly you don't want me touching you? A minute ago you were practically purring and all I did was kiss you. The mixed signals are about to make me dizzy here. Can you maybe clue me in as to what's going on here?”
"Hiding in Plain Sight" is a wonderful story of survival. The heroine and hero are very easy to get attached to; they are down to earth and very well developed as characters. The plot has a steady pace and readers will not want to put this book down until the mystery is solved. The suspense is well down however, some of the descriptions are overdone. Readers don't need to be continually told about the character or circumstances once the foundation has been laid. Also a handful of editing issues are present but don't hinder the story. Some fine tuning and this is a wonderful story with a very enjoyable ending that wraps up nicely
I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I love romantic suspense books, and this was a fabulous first time romance from a new author. It had all the right elements to keep me reading well into the night. I didn't want to put it down. I loved the characters and the way the hero and heroine brought out the best in each other. The heroine saw herself as weak, but in the end she found her strength from within. I am in love with Sheriff Bryan and wish there were more men like him in the world!! I am hoping with all my heart that Angela is working on a second book to follow this one. I will be waiting anxiously to see what she does next!!
I really enjoyed this book. The author had me laughing, crying, and maybe even squirming a little ;). The book is descriptive in all the right places. The author provides an intriguing storyline coupled along side a steamy romance. Grab this book and find a comfy reading spot definitely worth your time. Looking forward to future writings!.
Could not put this book down, very well written story a page turner start to finish!
Life seems perfect when you're a teenager who's just had her first kiss. And then tragedy strikes and Kierra's life is forever changed. She can escape the place, but she can't escape the memories. 10 years later she knows she's got to go figure out the rest of the story. From a shy, just blooming 16 year old, to a determined, focused 26 year old, Kierra travels back to the one place that holds both her greatest and worst memories. There are things left untold from that night and she wants to find closure. From a reunion with her high school sweetheart to finding the belonging she had yearned for all her life, we watch her find herself and the solution to the mystery that has haunted her these last ten years. This book is just the right mix of steamy romance and chilling mystery. Kierra is a strong young woman who can take care of herself, but sometimes it's nice to be rescued anyway! I received an ARC of the book in order to fascinate an honest review.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review Kierra was there the day her family died now 10 years later she is back to try and get answers from that horrible day. Bryan never forgot Kierra, now the sheriff, he can't believe his eyes when she is standing in the same room as him. Together they will find out what really happened that night, and she has to deal with the fact that the person who did this ,may still be alive and near. Bryan tries to break through her shell. She is trying to forgive the past and move on. When their worst nightmare happens will she find the strength to stay strong and be a true survivor. This is the first book by this author and it was a great read to really kept my interest and I had to know what happens. It is a fast read and the story has substance.
Kierra experienced so many things that night, feeling free of her abusive stepfather, sneaking out for the first time, her first kiss, and losing everyone she loved in a horrible explosion. It’s no surprise to say that that night changed her. Now ten years later, Kierra is back in town and Bryan [her first kiss] is the sheriff. She is convinced that her stepfather set the fire that killed her family, but there’s no evidence of that. Can Kierra convince Bryan to help her get the justice she deserves? Will her need for the truth draw the evil out from hiding? Is it really hiding if they’ve been in plain sight the whole time? I enjoyed this book; it had drama, suspense, a swoon worthy sheriff. What more do you need? I loved how patient and tender Bryan was with Kierra. No matter what she did to conceal herself, he always saw her beauty and strength. I give Hiding in Plain Sight 3.5 stars. *I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My Review: Oooh, I think I have a new romantic suspense author to follow. This was a good book. Confession time...I love second chance at love stories and this was a REALLY good one. Okay, so the premise..one night when they were teenagers, Bryan and Kierra had the perfect night making out in the back of his truck at a party. She went home...on cloud nine...and arrived just in time to watch her grandparents house explode with everyone she loved inside it. After that she got caught up in the foster care system and never saw Bryan again. In the book, it's ten years later and Kierra is back in this small town to prove that her stepfather murdered her family. Bryan is now the sheriff and willing to revisit all that chemistry that is still there between them. And then the book takes off from there...because Kierra's stepfather is still out there and sees his chance at the girl he didn't get the first time. *cue threatening music here* But seriously, this was a really good read. It's not super-long, but it's plenty long enough to experience the great chemistry between Bryan and Kierra. That night was the best and worst of Kierra's life and it left deep scars. She is not the same person as that 16 year old girl Bryan knew, but slowly she starts to evolve and come out of her shell...which I loved, but it also terrified me that when her stepfather did attack that she would lose all that forward progression she made. I won't say anything else about that because I don't want to spoil anything, but I love how strong of a character Kierra is even when she doesn't see it...at all. When she left she was terrified. She spent the last ten years learning how to fight and stand up for herself and when it counts, all that training came through. I really did love her. The set-up of the story is great, but I also loved the small town the story is set in. It truly becomes its own character and personality, especially in how it evolves in Kierra's viewpoint. Overall this was just a really well-done romantic suspense. I definitely recommend it. I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I could not put this book down. It carried seamlessly from the very first page and completely had me hooked. The suspense was fantastic and the romance was hot! Scorching! I liked the main character, Kierra, and that she wasn't the typical ‘needs to be saved’ type of girl, although the sexy sheriff, Bryan, does come in and rescue her in more ways than one. What starts off as a night of high school fun and romance, ends in terror and tragedy. Ten years later we’re transported back to the same sleepy little town where love reunites, but threats linger around every corner. This book has you on a roller coaster ride and the shocking ‘I can’t believe he did that’s’ keep you on edge wondering what’s next. I loved the way this story portrays the self-doubt most of us feel. Are we worthy of love, success, or anything else we want in life? Can we trust again after everything we’ve known is taken away? Hiding in Plain Sight is packed with everything you want and expect in a romantic suspense, topped with a great storyline. This is one you you’ll want to read!
