Monsters of New York

Aisling ached for the wild taste of open skies, the kind of freedom she was never meant to touch. Trapped beneath the weight of her Merrow blood, she felt the world shrink tighter around her every day, until the night a stranger ripped away the only thing that ever belonged to her. The only thing that made her feel alive.

She never imagined chasing her stolen power would drag her straight into the path of a man who looked at the world like it had already destroyed him. A man with nothing left to lose... and nothing left to give.

Liam Murphy buried his wife and walked away from the Irish Mob, leaving behind the only future he ever wanted. Now, all he has left are ghosts and regrets that taste like ash.

He swore he would never let family loyalty steal another piece of his heart. Not again. Not when the cost is everything.

But now everything, every boundary he set, would be tested.

Excerpt:

I’m all thumbs today.

And what pisses me off more is that I know exactly the reason.

It’s the sweet girl up in my room, discombobulating my senses and literally creating fires in my life.

A bottle of vodka slips from my hand and splatters on the floor.

The clear liquid absorbs into my pants and flows in all directions.

Danny, my barman, peeks around the corner to assess the damage. “Whoa, it’s going to be a rough day if your face already looks like that. Want me to call in Mary for a shift? Then you can confine yourself to the office like usual.”

I wipe the stray drops off my crotch and stare him down. “No need, I already arranged for someone new to come in. I’m guessing she has no experience, so I’ll have to train her.”

“Since when do you take care of training?” Danny asks.

“Since fucking now. Since when do you mind your own bloody business?”

His smile grows. “Since fucking now, boss. Let me know if I can help you mop that up.”

He returns to the bar, and I stand in the storeroom with my hands woven into my hair.

This is not how it’s supposed to be. I should not be this unsettled by the child currently residing in my home.

But in truth, she is no longer a child.

I was plagued by dreams of her in the night. She was standing over me, holding my hand and singing.

A fucking lullaby if I’m not mistaken.

Touching the place on my hand where the blister should be, I consider the options.

Maybe it was a superficial burn, and it cleared up overnight.

Or I imagined the event as a wispy warning of the fire that occurred this morning.

Either way, my hand feels fine, and I don’t know why.

I jump a little as the phone rings in my pocket. Inhaling deeply, I answer, “Hi, Ray. I was just thinking about you.”

“You’re going to regret that any second,” he says with regret in his voice.

My chest tightens.

I made it clear after Sarah that I was out. But he still has a way of pulling me in every time something that he can’t handle alone comes up.

And I made a promise.

“If it has anything to do with your business, that is exactly what it will stay. Your business.”

“Come on, Liam. You know I wouldn’t ask if I had any other choice. Besides, it’s an easy one this time.”

“That’s what you said a few months ago, and we lost two boyos. You are playing with fire, and I want no part in it.”

“Too late, my dearthắir.”

I hate when he guilts me into things.

But I do have a debt to settle.

“What do you need?”

“A man is going to come see you in the next few days. He is an authenticator and will examine our little relic,” he informs me.

“Where the fuck did you get a sea treasure hunter in the middle of fucking New York?” I ask.

“Not your concern. All you have to do is show him the piece and then wait for him to come back to you. But Liam … keep it quiet, yeah. Don’t want anyone snooping around our business.”

I sigh heavily. As if he needs to remind me every time.

We say our goodbyes, and I turn my attention back to the crises at hand.

A green mop of hair in a messy bun on top of her head peers around the corner. “Need some help with that?” She steps into the room, and suddenly the room feels too small for the both of us. She spots the mop behind the door and immediately whisks it out to clean the floor.

“Did you find everything you needed?”

A tendril of hair has come undone, and my fingers itch to swipe it behind her ear.

Oblivious to my thoughts, she keeps mopping.

“I found everything all right. When are you going to clean out her things, or do you randomly entertain women around the same size as your wife?”

My head whips in her direction. “What did you say?”

She speaks with total disregard of the tension seeping from my body. “I’m no detective or anything. That is a wedding picture hanging in your corridor. Obviously, she left you. I’m just putting it out there, but it could be because of your poor cooking skills. What I can’t understand is if she wanted to leave you, why do you still cling to her belongings? I mean, you need to move on sometime, am I right?”

My mouth goes dry, and my lips stick to each other.

She had no right.
