Excerpt:

At the sound of the door closing, Rick turned around, and her breath caught in her throat. She didn’t know what she was expecting, but not this. What did this man need with a fake wife? His jaw was chiseled, he had full lips, and deep brown eyes that sparkled under the frames of his black glasses. Eyes that seemed to be widening at her.

She swallowed. Oh God, was she not what he was expecting? Not what he wanted?

“It’s you,” he said in a deep voice.

Mia frowned.

Rick shook his head. “Sorry,” he muttered. “Ignore me, long day.” He rose and held out his hand. “Pleased to meet you, Mia, I’m Rick.”

Alana must’ve already told him her name.

“You too, Rick.” His hand was warm in her own. And, wow, did this man like eye contact. It was like he was drinking her in.

Alana took a seat behind her desk and Rick pulled out the one next to him for her. So, he was a gentleman, too.

“Here are the contracts,” Alana said, sliding a copy over to each of them. “I know you’ve both had a chance to look them over, but I think signing them in person is just so much more personal, don’t you?”

Mia gave a tight-lipped smile and Rick murmured something under his breath. They signed and slid the contracts back to Alana who was watching them with raised brows.

“Perhaps I might make a suggestion. You are meant to be married, after all. Maybe before your first public event you two should get to know each other. Right now, I’m getting awkward first date vibes, not happily married ones.”

“Maybe this will help,” said Rick, reaching into the pocket of his jeans and pulling out a ring box. He looked at her, something unsure in his gaze, before holding out his hand. Mia’s left hand stretched out toward him before she could even really think about what she was doing. The ring that he slipped on her finger was beautiful, like something out of a fairytale. It was something she would have chosen for herself had she been given the choice. It was a square white gold diamond with an emerald in the center. She couldn’t help it—she held it closer to the low hanging light and watched the sparkles dance.

Alana watched all this unfold with a smile playing on her lips.  She typed something into her phone. “There. Now you both have each other’s numbers. Time to set up your first date.”

Mia swallowed. With the weight of the ring on her finger and the weight of Rick’s gaze on her face, she really hoped she had made the right decision.
