Unexpected Victories, 3

Tish Douglass, pilot on the World Winter Games’ first four-woman bobsled team, has trained seriously and planned to follow in her Olympian father’s footsteps all her life. She has no patience for the goofballs on America’s Next Bobsled Team…until one of them makes her heart beat faster than a race around the bobsled track.

Joey Winslow has never been one to shy away from a challenge. Go on a reality show? Sure! Bobsled in the World Winter Games? Hell yeah! But for all his adventures, nothing can compare to the joy of the ice queen on the four-woman team melting in his arms.

The Games end in the blink of an eye. But if Joey can swallow his pride, and if Tish can admit there’s something she wants more than an Olympic medal, this could be the beginning of something even more amazing.

Excerpt:

“I’m really sorry about how I acted all those weeks. I was so stubborn and let my prejudices get in the way.”

“You already said that, and I already forgave you.”

“This is different. I apologized to you in the gym because I treated you badly. But now I’m sorry because…” She only had the nerve to say this because the Games were over, they might never see each other again, and she had nothing to lose as a result. “If I’d been even a little nicer, who knows what could’ve happened these past few weeks?”

“Nothing.”

Her heart sank at his certain tone. She’d been so sure of the vibes between them that night in the gym. Was he already spoken for? Was she that out of practice? “I see.”

She turned to leave, but an enormous hand on her shoulder gave her pause. “No, wait.”

She faced the big blond again to find him looking anguished. “Nothing would’ve happened because I couldn’t have done anything.” He paused as if to gather his thoughts. “I spent the two weeks before the Games celibate so I could hone my edge, same as before any big sporting event.”

“You do that, too?” Tish was flooded with relief and, inexplicably, energy. “I’ve been doing it for years and have the results to show for it, but trying to get everyone else to abstain was a lost cause.”

“Same. Finn’s married, Trevor has a boyfriend, and Drew had a new girl every night while we were here.” He leaned closer to whisper the next words into her ear. “Though if you’d shown even the slightest bit of interest, it would’ve been a lot harder to stick with it.”

Even at this short distance apart, Tish noticed that that wasn’t the only hard thing. Praise God for the height requirements for bobsledding that put men and women on a closer playing field than most other sports. Having Joey’s lips that close to her face had sent a shiver through her that had nothing to do with the outdoor temperature, and the faintest brush of his erection against her thigh reminded her what this burst of energy was: libido raging up.

She stepped close enough to put a hand to his chest as she spoke. “I don’t have anything to stay sharp for in the near future.”

He touched the small of her back as he closed the distance between them. “Me either.”

This close, she could appreciate the work he’d put into his body as never before. “We’re leaving tomorrow,” she said, leaning in to whisper in his ear.

He returned the gesture for his answer. “So are we.”

If either of them moved their face as little as an inch, they’d be close enough to kiss. “I guess that leaves tonight.”

“Then let’s make the most of it.” He closed the distance between them, and Tish jumped slightly at the touch to her earlobe that sent shocks through her and snapped her to attention as if she’d just gone around a particularly fast turn.
