A Different Kind of Valentines

As a widow for the past thirteen years, Valentine’s Day has certainly taken on a new meaning for me. No longer is it full of anticipation of a gift, a romantic dinner for two, and a passion-filled night. It has instead, become a day full of bittersweet memories of our past Valentine’s together. When we were just beginning our lives as young newlyweds with no money, I would pack his work lunch and include an “I love you” note along with a heart-shaped piece of chocolate.

Later in our marriage, he gifted me with a set of pots and pans; yep I was not a happy girl, how “unromantic” could one man be? When I questioned him he explained that because I love to cook, (I do) and he loves to eat my cooking, he thought it would be a thoughtful gift. Okay, when you put it like that, I get it.

Now, just remembering those past Valentine’s days when we were so in love, I tear up at our simple, sweet celebrations, reaffirmations of our commitment to each to death do us part. Even now, they bring tears to my eyes and make my heart swell with such joy and happiness. I was loved once and in turn, I loved, and that’s all that really matters on this day or for that matter, any other day.
