good read
The Demon of the Mine is a fun, fast-paced entry in the Cryptid Hunter series. I really enjoyed the detective-style mystery and the mix of romance, cryptids, and danger. Duncan and Lachlan’s dynamic is solid and familiar, and it’s nice to see them in action again—now as husbands. That said, for a novella-length story, there were a lot of characters. Between two royal families, the miners, friends like Potts and Jamie, and the new Pinkerton ally, it started to feel a bit overcrowded. I had to slow down a few times just to keep track of who was who. Still, the plot delivers—full of betrayal, intrigue, and action. The cryptid element (a grootslang!) adds a unique layer, and the story balances supernatural threat with very human greed and treachery. A good read overall—definitely worth it if you like detective work with a paranormal edge, but be prepared for a lot packed into a short space.
