Broken Mates, 3

She lost her wolf. He will do anything to protect her...

She’s afraid, marked and terrified. He's possessive, protective and ruthless.

Leda survived the worst of terrors and is hiding in the anonymity of New York. But her scent draws the attention of Alessandro Bianchi, a merciless dragon shifter. When her past threatens to reclaim her, Alessandro kidnaps her in order to save her. What he didn’t expect was to find his mate in the form of a terrified young wolfless shifter girl.

In a city teeming with predators, can the wounds of the past give way to a lifelong bond?

Excerpt:

For the second time in two days, Leda woke up startled in an unfamiliar room, her heart pounding furiously in her chest. The last thing she remembered was trying to jump that cliff … and now she was there.

She also knew she was too sweaty and too hot to be dead. Unless she’d gone straight to hell, the AC wasn’t working.

Looking around, she didn’t notice anything that resembled an AC. The décor was sparse and undoubtedly manly. She didn’t know where she was, or with whom, and past experiences left her with a bitter taste in her mouth.

How could the same shit happen to the same woman for the third time? Hadn’t she suffered enough?

The bed was comfy, but she figured she would soon spend enough time there to find it made of stone. She stood silently, unsurprised to see neither shoes nor slippers. Previously, they had also taken her footwear and forced her to walk barefoot, as if she were a beggar. Her stomach churned at the memory of what she had had to do then. She closed her eyes tightly and tried to push the memories away. She could have wallowed in existential misery, but for now, she had to find a way out.

She peered through the windows and was surprised to find they not only opened, but also had no bars. In the past, she had only been allowed near windows that were ridiculously high or barred, like a prison. And later they had fitted her with a tracking device in a bracelet that prevented her from attempting any escape because it not only had a built-in tracker, but also delivered electric shocks when she strayed too far from the mansion. She shuddered. She had only escaped the electric shocks when her previous abductor needed her services outside the usual perimeter, and that was why she had managed to escape when a young woman kidnapped much later was rescued by her mate.

And there she was thinking about the past again … she needed to get a grip on reality, or she’d lose her mind soon enough.

The windows had no bars, but were very high. She wouldn’t be able to jump and land safely even if she could shift. And honestly, after peeking through it? She didn’t want to. She wasn’t in a mansion, but on the top floor of an enormous building. She’d be a pancake down below if she tried to jump—shifter or not.

The hairs on the back of her neck stood to attention, and she knew she wasn’t alone anymore; taking a deep breath, she turned and faced the person who had silently entered the room.

It was the same man she’d seen at the bar. Bianchi-what’s-his-name.

And suddenly she remembered last night … she’d jumped … closed her eyes … and in the next moment she was flying through the air until consciousness faded into nothingness.

The way the man kept staring at her was unnerving. Clearing her throat, she asked, “Why am I here?”

“For your protection.”

She snorted.

“That’s new. And how much is that going to cost me?”

“Pardon?”

“What do I have to do in order to get that so-called protection?”

He frowned.

“So-called?” he repeated.

“The first time I was taken, it was to ‘protect me from the big bad wolf.’” She made quotation-mark gestures with her fingers and watched his expression grow increasingly serious. “I paid with my virginity for it. The second was as leverage against the first. I paid with my wolf for it. Now I have nothing more to give. I don’t know what you paid for me, but you should ask for a refund.”

It was only when she heard a roar erupting from the depths of his throat that she realized she had gone too far. His eyes had narrowed to two slits, glowing yellow and sending shivers down her spine, and smoke was coming from his mouth...

For the first time, she feared she’d crossed an invisible line.

“I want names,” he said through clenched teeth. More smoke came from his mouth, but since he wasn’t smoking, that meant…

“What are you?” she whispered, truly frightened for the first time.

“I’m a dragon, and I want names,” he hissed, and she took a deep breath.

“That can’t be … dragons don’t exist…”

“You’re a wolf shifter and don’t believe in dragons? Then you may as well start believing, piccolina, because you just entered the den of one.”
