Men of Severn, 4
Ashe Roman had everything—fame, money, and stadiums full of screaming fans. Until he destroyed it all.
When the rock-country crossover star crashes back into his hometown of Severn after a disastrous tour, the last thing he expects is to run into the girl he never had the courage to ask out.
Kaelie Swanson remembers Ashe as the quiet music nerd from high school. Now he’s a global celebrity with a reputation for drinking too much and burning every bridge he crosses.
Kaelie has lived that story before. Her father was an addict, and she swore she would never love someone she had to watch destroy themselves.
But the chemistry between them is impossible to ignore. As Ashe fights for sobriety and a second chance at life, Kaelie must decide if risking her heart is worth the danger.
Because loving Ashe Roman might be the best thing that ever happens to her … or the mistake that breaks them both.
Excerpt:
“You were the cheerleader,” I say suddenly. The words slip out before I can stop them.
Her eyes narrow slightly. “And you were the music nerd.”
I grin. “I still am.”
“Obviously.”
We start walking slowly down the trail without really discussing it. Side by side. The gravel crunches beneath our shoes.
“You remember that?” she asks after a minute.
“What?”
“High school.”
I glance at her. “You think I wouldn’t?”
Her expression shifts slightly. “You didn’t exactly talk to me much.”
“That’s because I was terrified of you.”
That stops her in her tracks. “What?”
I shrug, slowing to match her pace. “You were the most intimidating girl in the building.”
“Intimidating.”
“Yes.”
She folds her arms across her chest. “I was a cheerleader.”
“Exactly.”
She stares at me like I’ve completely lost my mind. “That makes no sense.”
“You had perfect grades, ran half the clubs in school, and dated the quarterback.”
She rolls her eyes. “That was only senior year.”
“Still counts.”
“And you had girls throwing themselves at you during band competitions.”
“That was different.”
“How?”
“I understood music.”
She laughs and the sound hits me harder than expected. It’s warm, unfiltered, and real. God, I forgot how good it feels to hear her laugh.
“You’re ridiculous,” she says.
“Probably.”
We keep walking and the trail dips slightly as it curves toward the creek. And then Kaelie’s foot hits a patch of loose gravel.
“Shit…”
Her ankle twists sharply beneath her and she stumbles sideways. I catch her before she can hit the ground. Again. Apparently this morning’s theme is me grabbing Kaelie Swanson before gravity finishes the job.
