Project Morpheus, 2

Pele Tuitama’s Morpheus Squad mission infiltrating a Smoky Mountain children's camp is FUBAR. He might be a virally-enhanced military experiment, but augmented abilities won’t help him protect Reagan McNeill, the most unsecure-able target imaginable. Sweet Reagan’s kisses and the possibility of a future he should never consider, distracts his laser focus. If Pele can’t keep Reagan safe from an evil adversary bent on revenge against the entire McNeill family, then Reagan will die.

After a nasty breakup, Reagan doesn’t trust any man—or herself. Enter handsome Pele, the world’s worst camp counselor. She doesn’t believe his story or his motives. When overly-protective Pele draws her close and then rejects her, Reagan is finished with games. Then the truth she learns rips open recently-healed emotional wounds.

In order to escape through the mountains, Pele must share his deadliest secret. To have a chance at their future, they must reveal their demons and pray for acceptance ... and survival.

Excerpt:

Pele kicked the door closed with his booted foot and turned to her. “I meant what I said. You’re beautiful.”

“I, um— Okay, thanks.”

“No, Reagan. You don’t understand.” When he framed her face in his hands, a strange emotion, something sad but hopeful, sparked deep down inside her walled-off heart.

Almost reverently, he brushed his lips over her forehead, her eyebrows, and both cheeks. Shivers shot through her body after each light kiss, and she leaned into his touch.

As much as she wanted him to transport her on a cloud of happiness, they’d been here already. Twice. She didn’t trust either of them in this situation.

“Pele, stop for a minute.” Tugging on his wrists, she pulled his hands away, hating the lack of connection. She needed a little distance to breathe. To think. “See this here? You and me in the cabin? Doing this?”

“Yes.”

She stepped back, breaking contact. “We’ve rehearsed this scenario before. Spoiler alert: It ends with you making an excuse and then running out that door.”

“I had to go before.”

“Sure you did.” She waved off his retort. “Look, you’re a great guy, like, really great.” She swallowed. “But I don’t have it in me to go through another repeat of how we’ve done this before.” Damn it, when her voice cracked. “I can’t handle another rejection. Not after this week, and not after tonight.”

“I didn’t reject you,” he protested.

“That’s not how it appeared from where I stand.” She crossed her arms. “Why are you here, now, Pele?” she said, not caring if she made him uncomfortable. It was time for stark truth. “What do you want?”

His jaw worked for a full minute. Cords tightened in his neck and shoulders. Damn. She might not want his answer if it took that long.

The words came out raw, like he’d yanked them from his chest. “I want you, Reagan. All of you.”

She sucked in a breath. “You have a funny way of showing it.”

“Like, I said … chalk the last two nights up to really bad timing and some personal issues on my part.”

“Huh. Go on.” Was that sweat on his brow? Good.

“I would only want to … be with you, if you want the same exact thing.”

“Be more specific.”

Ti’o, you aren’t making this easy.”

“It hasn’t been an easy week for me.”

“That’s fair.” He rubbed his thigh and glanced over her shoulder toward the window. Then the full weight of his deep, dark eyes fell on her. “You want specific?”

“Yes?” Her voice cracked.

“If it was up to me, we would go downstairs to your room. I would strip you naked and taste every inch of your body before we have what I pray to any god out there is a night of amazing sex where you are totally satisfied. Multiple times.”

“Oh,” she exhaled, a liquid heat pooling between her legs where a throbbing sensation began.

“You asked for specifics.” Was his chest rising and falling faster? “Let me know if you want more details.”

Written by Regina K on 16th Apr 2023

Great read, lots of action and suspense. Oh yes and romance, the yummy kind. Pele is on a mission, the mission is to keep Reagan safe. But to do that he has to go camping with her and her students. The are not grown students lol. A fun read that will keep you interested to the end. I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own

WOW! This is the second in the "Project Morpheus" series. This one can be read as a stand alone. I did read the "Fallen Comrade" first. I personally think reading them in order is best. This story is about Pele and Reagan. This is such an intriguing and interesting read. The plot is so good with action, suspense and good twists in the story. I love the characters and the plot is great!

Great book
Written by Abooknut on 5th Mar 2023

This was a really entertaining page-turning adventure with Pele & Reagan. I found that there were so many twists that i had to stay on my toes with the plot, but it was extremely entertaining. These two also not only had phenomenal chemistry, but the way that Pele protects her was very sweet.

Terrific
Written by xo2read on 5th Mar 2023

A new author for me. This is the 2nd part of a duet titled: Project Morpheus. I loved the read but wished I had the opportunity to read the first book proper title Harden Comrade and I recommend reading in order. This story follows Pete and Reagan. Reagan is Kiera's older sister. Reagan’s family is grieving the loss of her mother and her older brother, Blake as well, she is dealing with a nasty abusive ex. She’s finally starting to find her way without the constant jabs to her self esteem. Pele's been assigned to protect Reagan. A difficult task since she works outdoors in the mountains at an educational camp for school age children. A suspenseful, edge of your seat romance.

Some intense moments
Written by RahiaLeight on 5th Mar 2023

I had a real hard time getting into the story at the start. I honestly skimmed through the first part of the story, until around the night hike - probably my favorite part of the story. Things got exciting when someone hid by her truck at the bar followed shortly after by a touch of heat, then drones and bad guys chasing them through the forest, and that bear. I felt like the end was a bit abrupt, but overall I liked the story.

Hidden Comrade

I am so excited to have gotten the chance to read more about the Morpheus Squad! After reading the first book I was so curious just how far Lequire was going to go to keep his secrets and protect his father's reputation as well. Reagan is Kiera's older sister. While the whole family has suffered the loss of their mother and Blake their older brother, Reagan has also had to deal with the issue of an abusive ex-fiance. After being with him for two years she's only just now finally starting to find herself again without the critical and hurtful words of her ex. Pele's been assigned to protect Reagan. A job that seems to be doomed from the beginning given that Reagan works outdoors in the mountains at an educational camp for school age children. He's planned and set up surveillance the best he could given the short time to plan for his mission. What he didn't plan on was Reagan herself. A woman who's obviously been hurt but is determined to take back her control and life. A woman who's willing to research a meal to assuage his homesick feeings for his homeland. However, these feelings are a distraction that Pele can't afford. But at the same time he can't hurt and reject Reagan when these mutual feelings and his beast call out for her. It's also not like the life he has now is productive and ideal for a woman. Especially one who's only just finding herself again after a failed relationship. I won't lie, I felt like it took F-O-R-E-V-E-R to get to the action of this book. While I can understand it, I just felt like compared to the first book this was slow going and then when we do get to the action part it's very quick and over faster than I was hoping. By the time I got to the 75% marker of this book I was wondering if we were honestly going to be getting a book about this sister, but no issues with Lequire.

This is the second book in this series, and I would highly recommend reading the first one so that you understand this one better. I loved this one just as much as the first one, lots of suspense and romance, along with some hold your breath moments. Cannot wait to read the next one.

What an adventure gone wild! Pele is in such a hard spot. Throw in what he needs to do & what he actually feels, you feel for the guy. Reagan needs to trust what she feels besides her baggage. All the action & crazy chemistry keeps you engaged. Looking forward to the next book!
